ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State swept Texas A&M-Texarkana in Sunday's doubleheader with a shutout win in game one, 15-0, followed by a 7-2 victory in the second contest.
HSU (6-6) recorded 26 hits over the team games for a total of 22 runs.
Lily Warren combined for four hits on six plate appearances with three RBIs and a scored run.
Macy Hoskins went 5-of-8 in the batter's box with three runs batted in and scored three. In the circle,
Katelyn McMahan got her first win of the season in the first contest, while
Erika Bittinger picked up her third win in game two.
Henderson State begins GAC play next week with a trip to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma State on Feb. 23-24.
GAME ONE: HSU 15, TAMUT 0
The Reddies were off to a fast start, plating six runs in the bottom half of the first innings to take a 6-0 lead. Warren singled to lead off for HSU and would steal second before the two-hole hitter Hoskins singled up the middle to plate Warren.
Brooke Johnson, the following bat, blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 3-0. A double down the left field line by
Jodi De Hart scored two more runs to make it 5-0, and a sacrifice fly by Warren would plate the final run of the inning.
In the circle, Johnson struck out three batters in the first two frames and gave up just two hits in the three innings she pitched.
Josie Golden provided the next two runs for Henderson with a two-run home run over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the second to extend the Reddies' lead to 8-0.
Henderson put up another crooked number in the bottom of the third, scoring seven more runs to make it 15-0. Walks by
Addison Tidwell and Warren had runners on first and third with one out, and a hit through the left side by Hoskins would score Tidwell from third. The following at-bat, a throwing error by the Eagles's pitcher would plate another run. Singles by
Kaylin Kauffman and
Jorika Alvarez made it 13-0 before the Reddies added their final two runs.
Golden was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Warren was 2-2 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Johnson pitched 3.0 innings and gave up zero runs and two hits while striking out four batters. McMahan came in for relief in the top of the fourth and picked up her second with of the season with two scoreless frames and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: HSU 7, TAMUT 2
Similar to the game one of the doubleheader, HSU took a 6-0 run in the bottom of the first. An RBI double off the bat of Alvarez scored
Mackenzie Williams and
Josie Copeland from first and second to make it 3-0. Two more hits and a grounded out plated the next three runs in the frame before Texas A&M-Texarkana got the final out.
The Reddies added another score in the bottom of the second after a leadoff triple from Copeland, who would reach home on a groundout from Williams. The Eagles pulled two runs back in the top of the third on two hits and an error to trim HSU's lead to 7-2. After quiet fourth and fifth frames, the two sides threatened to add more runs to their score in the sixth, but both pitchers were able to work out of the jam and leave runners stranded.
Hoskins and Copeland led the bats in the second game, each going 3-of-4, while Warren and Williams both went 2-4 at the plate. Bittinger got the win after pitching two scoreless innings and giving up just one hit in six at-bats.
Makenna Keeton and
Sophie Weaver also made appearances in relief, both pitching a full inning.
