ADA, Okla. – Henderson State dominates from minute one in the 85-68 rout over East Central on Thursday night in the Kerr Activities Center.
HSU (16-9, 12-7) was red-hot shooting the ball, as they finished the game with a 55.6 percent shooting mark from the field and were 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.
Tori Gittens led the scoring with 21 points on 69.2 percent shooting, while
Ashley Farrar tallied 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and was 3-of-4 from deep.
Makenna Winans led the team at the glass, grabbing eight of the team's 32 rebounds.
After East Central opened the game with a three-pointer, the Reddies dominated the next three minutes on a 12-0, featuring three-pointers from Gittens and Huggins to take a 12-3 lead. The Tigers clawed back into the game with a pair of triples to make it a one-point game, but a
JJ Eddens three-pointer stretched the lead back to four.
Sam Basson converted a three-point play on a driving layup to give HSU a 22-17 lead at the end of the first period.
Jumpers from Farrar and Huggins to start the second quarter pushed the Reddies ahead by six, and a second three-pointer by Gittens would make it a seven-point contest 29-22. Another trey for Gittens grew the lead to double-digit points, and a 4-0 burst just a few possessions later stretched HSU's edge to the largest lead of the half, 40-29. East Central would trim Henderson's advantage in the final minute to 40-33 heading into the halftime break.
Farrar provided the red-and-grey with five points in the first three minutes of the third stanza to help grow the Reddies' lead to 49-35. East Central made it a three-possession game with a three-pointer following a 4-0 run, but Farrar knocked down her second triple of the game to push HSU back in front by 12. Gittens and Winans drained jumpers before
Olivia Allen provided the final points of the quarter from the foul line, with Henderson leading 61-50.
HSU opened the fourth quarter with two quick baskets in succession to take a 66-50 lead after a three-pointer from Huggins and a layup by
Bobbi Bazzle. Huggins drained her third triple just seconds later to add to the Reddies' edge just before Gittens knocked down a jumper to make it an 18-point game. Henderson took its largest lead of the game on a 5-0 burst capped off by a trey from Farrar to push in front 78-55. Henderson remained in control for the final minutes of the game to win 85-68.
HSU concludes its final Oklahoma road trip of the regular season at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m.
