Softball Sweeps Christian Brothers in Tuesday’s Doubleheader

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State picks up its second doubleheader sweep of the season after going 2-0 against Christian Brothers on Tuesday at Dee White Field.

HSU (9-8) recorded 20 hits across the two games, led by Miyah Jackson with four hits, including two doubles, on six at-bats with four runs scored and an RBI. Savannah Carrigan got the win in game one from the circle, pitching all 7.0 frames, while Meagan Allen picked up her first win in game two, and Makenna Keenton got the save.

The Reddies resume GAC action on Friday and Saturday at Arkansas Tech, starting on Mar. 5 at 5 p.m.

GAME ONE: HSU 8, CBU 2
The Lady Bucs would strike first in the top of the opening frame with a two-run homer to take an early lead. The Reddies replied in the bottom of the first with a little two-out magic to jump in front 5-2. Following back-to-back strikeouts swinging to start the inning, HSU rattled off three straight hits, including a double from Miyah Jackson, to tie the game 2-2. A single up the middle by Josie Golden plated two more runs before the second baseman would eventually cross home for the final run of the inning on a passed ball.

After giving up the two-run shot in the top of the first, starting pitcher Savannah Carrigan settled in and delivered six scoreless frames. While the Lady Bucs bats were kept cold, the Reddies added runs in the second, third and fourth innings to extend their advantage to 8-2.

Macy Hoskins reached first in the second on a leadoff walk and would steal second to get in scoring position with one out. Jackson's second hit of the game scored the freshman to increase the lead to 6-2. Josie Golden provided the lone run in the third with a solo home run over the left-center field wall before an RBI ground out from Jorika Alvarez in the fourth scored HSU's final run, 8-2.

Carrigan threw her first complete game of the season, and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four. Jackson and Golden led the Henderson bats with three hits each, while Golden finished with a team-high three RBIs.

GAME TWO: HSU 5, CBU 2
After stranding a CBU baserunner on second in the top of the first, Henderson would score three runs in the bottom half to lead early. The Reddies loaded the bases with one out, and Emylee Bittinger would double to the left-center field to plate the first two runs. Erika Bittinger batted in the next run of the inning with a single to shortstop to play Jackson from third, 3-0.

The Lady Bucs pulled two runs back in the next two innings, but Henderson would stretch its lead back to 4-2 after Em. Bittinger picked up her third RBI of the game in the bottom of the third. Both sets of bats were kept quiet in the fourth and fifth frames before the Reddies tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. A leadoff single by Justine Burch would turn into HSU's fifth run of the game on a failed pickoff attempt at first base by CBU, which allowed Burch to steal home from third.

Keeton came in for relief in the top of the seventh and allowed a leadoff single, but heads by Mackenzie Williams at second base would see the Reddies turn a double play. In the following at-bat, Keeton got a flyout to center field for the final out to secure her first save of the season.
