ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After seeing a 2-0 defeat in the first game, Henderson State comes back in the second contest of the doubleheader to win 5-4 in ten innings against cross-street rivals Ouachita Baptist.
The Reddies finished with four hits in the first game, with
Macy Hoskins,
Jodi De Hart,
Hilary Akers and
Justine Burch each recording a knock.
In game two of the doubleheader,
Mackenzie Williams,
Josie Copeland and
Emylee Bittinger all recorded a multiple-hit game with two hits each. Williams was perfect at the plate with three walks and a run scored. Copeland had the most important swing of the evening, with an RBI double to score the game-winning run.
GAME ONE: OUA 2, HSU 0
The Reddies threatened to take an early lead in the top of the fist after leadoff hitter
Lily Warren reached first on an error and stole second and third with one out. Back-to-back outs for Ouachita Baptist would strand the runner in scoring position and give the Tigers momentum heading into the bottom of the first, where they would take a 1-0 lead from a home run.
OUA added to its advantage two innings later on a throwing error by pitcher
Brooke Johnson, which allowed a runner on third to score. The Tigers' pitching staff kept the HSU bats in check, with just one hit through three frames.
Henderson had an opportunity in the fifth to pull a run back with
Justine Burch on third with two outs after leading off the inning with a single. Warren would go down for the final out on a ground out after working a seven-pitch at-bat battle. OUA went on to take the first game 2-0 after stranding a pair of HSU baserunners in the top of the sixth.
GAME TWO: HSU 5, OUA 4 (10 inn.)
Henderson opened the back-and-forth contest with a 1-0 lead in the top of the second following two hits and a walk.
Jay Albiter knocked the second hit of the inning to center field to score
Katelyn McMahan from second. Shortly after, Ouachita Baptist took the upper hand with a three-run bottom of the second.
After early runs were traded, both sides were limited in the third and fourth innings. The Reddies made a breakthrough in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs to tie the game 3-3. Warren's leadoff single and stolen base led to the first run after Johnson knocked an RBI single through the left side. A double off the bat of
Macy Hoskins set up the next run, which would score on a groundout by Emlyee Bittinger.
Ouachita took the lead again in the following half-inning, but the Reddies tied things up again, 4-4 in the sixth. After a scoreless seventh frame, HSU and OUA would head to extra innings. The Reddies and Tigers both had runners reach in the eighth, but both sides could do no more.
The ninth was similar to the previous frame, so the game was extended to a tenth inning. A leadoff double by
Emylee Bittinger led to Henderson taking a 5-4 lead, following a go-ahead RBI double by Josie to Copeland to score pinch runner
Bre Jones.
Meagan Allen, who started the game, reentered in the eighth and provided two scoreless frames to help secure the win.
HSU (11-14, 3-8) heads to Southeastern Oklahoma State for its next GAC series on Mar. 15-16. The Reddies and Savage Storm open the three-game series with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m.
