ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -
Malek Davis scored a career-high 40 points in his final collegiate game as Henderson State scored its most points in a conference game this season Saturday afternoon at Harding's expense, 102-90.
Davis bested
Zyon Patterson's 38 points from a couple weeks ago for the most points from a Reddie this season as Davis' new career-high is the most points scored by an HSU player in the
Jimmy Elgas era.
The senior from St. Louis, Mo., scored all 40 of his points on 15 field-goals, including a season-high six three-pointers, and four field-goals. Fellow seniors Patterson and
Ken Lewis celebrated their final game at the Duke Wells Center with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Lewis echoed Davis with a season-high four triples.
The Reddies out-rebounded the Bisons, 40-30, while winning the second-chance-points battle, 22-11. Assisting in the rebound advantage were seniors
Tomislav Miholjcic with nine boards, six of which were of the offensive glass, and
KJ Stewart with seven. The red-and-gray also out-gained Harding in the paint, 40-26.
Saturday's season-finale saw five lead-changes while Harding built an eight-point lead with seven and a half minutes to go in the first half, 32-24. That lead grew to 10 before Davis went to work, scoring 10 of HSU's final 14 first-half points to head into the locker room up three, 46-43.
Davis and Lewis exchanged three-pointers to open the second half to establish a double-digit lead within the first two minutes of the final frame, 56-46. That lead stayed between 8-12 over the next 10 minutes before Harding cut the deficit to three at the 6:58 mark.
A quick seven-run spurt over the next 60 seconds reestablished a 10-point advantage for the home team, however, proving to be the final nail in the coffin as the Bisons never got within eight points again.
Henderson St. closes the 2023-24 regular season with a 9-18 record, including an 8-14 stance in the GAC, before finishing the season with its ninth consecutive victory over the Harding Bisons. Â
