ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State and Southern Nazarene battled back and forth early, and it would be the Crimson Storm who came away with a 5-4 win to open the series at Dee White Field.
HSU (18-25, 9-19) outhit SNU 10-to-7 but struggled in the later innings to generate hits with runners, as the team stranded seven runners in the final three frames and 11 total for the game.
Josie Copeland led the team with three hits and an RBI, while
Hilary Akers notched two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Southern Nazarene was first on the board in the top of the opening frame, exploding for four runs after four hits and an error. The Reddies were quick to reply in the bottom half with a three-run inning to cut the Crimson Storms lead to one, 4-3.
Following back-to-back walks by
Jorika Alvarez and
Brooke Johnson, SNU made a pitching change, but that did not slow the Reddies, as Akers doubled to score the pair of runners. Copeland's first hit of the game was a single up the middle to plate the third and final run of the frame.
The Crimson Storm's offense added to their score in the second with a solo home run to stretch their lead to 5-3. Henderson again answered in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by
Josie Golden to score Akers from second.
After recording a combined eight runs in the first three innings, the game saw its first scoreless frame in the fourth. The two sides settled in on the rubber, as both sets of pitchers provided zeros in the fifth and sixth.
During the bottom of the fifth, Henderson threatened to pull a run back with runners on first and second with two outs but could not advance the runners any further before the final out of frame. The red-and-grey had another opportunity in the bottom of the seventh to even the contest with the bases loaded and one out, but back-to-back outs ended the late rally, as SNU took game one 5-4.
The Reddies remain at Dee White Field for the series conclusion on Saturday, Apr. 13, with a doubleheader slated to start at noon as Henderson looks to even the series in game one.
