SHAWNEE, Okla. – A slow start by Henderson State trips up the Reddies in the series finale against (RV) Oklahoma Baptist 6-2 at the Bison Softball Park.
Hilary Akers paced the red-and-grey with two of the team's four hits, while Jodie De Hart recorded her first home run of the season, batting in all two runs.
Starting pitcher
Savannah Carrigan fell to 1-4 on the year after surrendering five runs on three hits in 2.0 innings, and
Katelyn McMahan pitched the final 4.0 frames, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three batters.
HSU and OKBU both recorded a base runner in the first but the score would remain 0-0 before the Bisons bats got going in the bottom of the second, plating five runs to lead 5-0. Four of Oklahoma Baptist's five runs came with one swing of the bat on a grand slam before a second home run brought in the final score.
After coming in for relief in the bottom of the third, McMahan faced the minimum in the third and fourth to slow the Bison offense and keep them from adding more runs.
Henderson pulled two runs back in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 5-2 after a two-run blast by De Hart over the center field wall. However, Oklahoma Baptist scored a run of its own in the bottom half to keep it a four-run game, 6-2.
The Reddies would go down in order in the sixth and seventh, as Oklahoma Baptist took the final game of the series to complete the sweep. HSU (20-28, 11-19) returns to Dee White Field for the regular series finale and Senior Day against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Apr. 26-27.
