ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - In the final three games of the 2024 regular season, the first game of the Battle of the Ravine baseball series went the way of Ouachita Baptist, 12-9.
Henderson State held a 9-7 advantage after eight innings of play, but five unanswered from the Tigers in the top of the ninth and top of the tenth granted Ouachita Baptist the early advantage in the weekend.
In his final weekend series at Clyde Berry Field, senior
Kaden Argenbright claimed his 300th career hit, finishing the day going 3-for-5, including a home run, with three RBI and a run scored.
Luke Rice and
Cal Jones both added two hits with Rice matching Argenbright's three RBI.
Flipping the script on HSU's last four games, it was the Reddies who held the lead following the opening inning this time. Following OUA's first run, a Rice single and a
Luke Farrar two-RBI double gave the game its first lead change, 3-1.
Henderson added another two runs with Rice's second and third RBI of the early going. With the 5-1 lead, HSU's offense stalled over the next two innings as Ouachita took advantage with a four-spot in the third frame thanks to a pair of two-run home runs.
After a brief scoring hiatus from both sides, two runs from the Tigers in the sixth inning gave them the lead for all of three outs. In the home-half of the sixth, a two-out RBI-single from Jones led the way for Argenbright's biggest swing of the night with a three-run bomb to move in front, 9-7.
That appeared to be the final momentum swing, but with HSU only one out away from victory in the top of the ninth, a bloop single preceded what was at the time Ouachita's third home run of the game to tie things up at 9-9.
Henderson was forced to strand two base runners in the bottom of the ninth as the purple-and-gold added three more runs on two outs in the top of the tenth for the Tigers' biggest lead of the game. Three outs later, game one went to Ouachita Baptist, 12-9.
Henderson State will look to pick up a pair of wins in the doubleheader Saturday, Apr. 27 beginning at 1 p.m. The Reddies' Senior Day presentation will take place prior to Saturday's first pitch when HSU recognizes 12 of its seniors.  Â
