Reddies Use Big Run to Defeat Christian Brothers in Final Non-Conference Game

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Henderson State took to the road Saturday for its first true away game of the season, taking on former Gulf South rival Christian Brothers. The Reddies used another high-percentage shooting night and dominant rebound play to defeat the Buccaneers by a final of 83-64.

The first 15 minutes of the game were an evenly played affair, as both teams traded baskets. The Reddies led for over 16 of the game's first 20 minutes, but never led by more than four points.

That is, until the last five minutes of the opening period. With 4:53 remaining in the half, Zaveion Okoh tied the game at 31 with a layup; from there, the Reddies went on a 25-2 run over the next nine minutes of game action, including scoring the first 15 points of the second half. By the time that run was over, Henderson was firmly in front, 54-33.

The HSU defense was stifling over that period, as the Reddies held the Bucs to 0-for-15 shooting from the field and out-rebounded CBU 11-2 over the first six minutes of the second half.

The Buccaneers got the Henderson lead down to eight points with 9:04 remaining, but a quick 19-9 Reddie run put the game away; the Reddies led by as many as 20 before the final margin was set at 19.

HSU was once again efficient from the field, shooting 33-of-55 for the game (60 percent) while holding CBU to 22-of-64 shooting. The Reddies dominated the rebounding battle again, out-rebounding the Bucs 40-26.

Okoh paced the Henderson score sheet once again, this time recording his first double-double of the season. The junior poured in 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five steals.

Tyson Whybrew stood out for HSU for the second consecutive game, logging 15 points and five rebounds on six-of-seven shooting. KJ Sykes added 14 points while leading the team with five assists, and Jameel Wesley II added 11 points on a perfect four-for-four shooting night.

The Reddies open Great American Conference play on Thursday, December 4th, with the first of three consecutive home games. Henderson welcomes Southeastern Oklahoma State to the Duke Wells Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
