HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Henderson State found itself on the wrong end of a 7-4 final score against No. 11 Missouri Southern on Saturday. The game was played at Hot Springs' Majestic Park as a part of the second day of the Mike Dugan Invitational.
In a game that featured four lead changes, Luke Farrar opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first. An MSSU run on a wild pitch tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, and the Lions would go on to take the lead in the second with a solo home run. Jeremy Schork helped HSU get back on top via a two-run single. After regaining the upper hand on a two-run triple in the fifth, Missouri Southern would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the game. Luke Rice drove in the Reddies' last run of the day on a groundout to the pitcher.
Cal Jones built off of a strong opening day performance by getting on base three times in five plate appearances on Saturday. The Texarkana, Texas, native was the only Henderson player to score multiple runs. He also recorded one of the team's two doubles.
Right fielder Jaxson Gregg also reached base safely three times, including two hits and a walk.
Austin Scritchfield was responsible for two hits, with one being a double. He later came around to score.
Rice extended his team-leading RBI total to four and scored once.
Dawson Goines allowed no runs and just two baserunners in 2.1 innings of relief work.
HSU will close out the Dugan Invitational with its home opener versus Arkansas-Fort Smith on Sunday, February 2. First pitch is slated for noon at Clyde Berry Field.
