ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State (9-2, 3-0) walks it off in the bottom of the eighth to complete the series sweep of Southeastern.
Â
The Reddies entered today's matchup with its first conference series win over the Savage Storm since 2017, looking to add the first series sweep since GAC play began in 2012. HSU did just that in dramatic fashion.
Â
After scoring two runs in the first inning the Reddie bats went quiet, up until the seventh inning when they needed it most. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth
Mackenzie Williams reached first on an error with bases loaded, scoring
Raylee Carey. The run evened the game for Henderson State at 3-3.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth it was Carey who played hero for the Reddies. With runners on the corners Carey singled to right field, scoring
Macy Hoskins and clinching the series sweep for the Reddies.
Â
In the circle late for the Reddies was
Presley Applegate (1-0), Applegate picked up her first win, pitching two innings, allowing three hits and zero runs. In the eighth inning Applegate allowed just one hit and got the Savage Storm's leadoff hitter to pop out to first base.
Â
Henderson State currently holds the longest winning streak (8) in the GAC and sits atop the conference standings. Â
Â
Henderson State has not held an eight-game winning streak since 2015 when they won the conference championship and reached the NCAA Central Regional, the Reddies held both an eight-game winning streak and nine-game winning streak that season.
Â
The Reddies now turn their heads to a Tuesday nonconference double-header matchup with Union in Jackson, Tenn. before traveling to Monticello, Ark on Friday for a GAC series versus Arkansas-Monticello.
