Farrar's Blast Lifts Reddies to Doubleheader Split Versus SAU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — A grand slam from Luke Farrar lifted Henderson State to a 4-0 win over Southern Arkansas on Saturday in the seven-inning game and earned the Reddies a split of the GAC doubleheader at Clyde Berry Field.

HSU (18-14, 12-8) will go for its fifth-straight GAC series victory tomorrow when the two teams meet again in a rubber match at 1 p.m.

GAME TWO: Henderson State 4, Southern Arkansas 0
The Reddies used a grand slam from Luke Farrar, and stellar pitching from Ethan Roark and Payton Byrd, to blank Southern Arkansas 4-0 in the second game of the doubleheader and even the GAC series at Clyde Berry Field.

Farrar's big swing came on a 1-2 count with two outs in the second inning and was responsible for the only runs of the game on either side. It was his ninth home run of the season and served as the highlight for his 3-for-3 effort at the plate.

Roark was excellent for Henderson in his sixth start of the season, going 4.2 innings and allowing no runs on just three hits. He retired the first seven Muleriders batters of the game and also struck out two.

Byrd earned the victory by pitching the final 2.1 innings to close it out. He entered with two runners aboard and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but struck out SAU's Jaden Woolbright to end the threat. Byrd struck out three and surrendered just two hits.

Southern Arkansas threatened late in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate, but Byrd got Lee Matsuzaki to pop up to end the game.

SAU was held scoreless for just the second time this season. The Reddie win snapped a five-game winning streak for the Muleriders. The victory pulled HSU within one game of Southern Arkansas in the GAC standings.

GAME ONE: Southern Arkansas 6, Henderson State 2
Henderson State could not get its bats going in the series opener on Saturday and fell to Southern Arkansas 6-2.

The Reddies' high-powered offense was limited to just one run on eight hits and stranded eight baserunners in defeat. Julio Vasquez was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead HSU and hit his first home run of the year in the fifth. Both Luke Rice and Jeremy Schork added two hits while Luke Farrar drove in the final run of the game in the ninth.

Cole Rodriguez took his first loss in GAC play this season on the mound after allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

SAU grabbed the momentum early on a lead-off home run from Jaden Woolbright and never looked back. The Muleriders added two runs in the third and then answered the Vasquez home run with a two-run blast of their own in the top half of the sixth.

Henderson put two runners on base to lead off both the first and fourth innings, but came away empty handed on both occasions. The Reddies were 3-for-14 with runners on base and 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the game.
