Reddies Fight Past SWOSU, Sweep Series on Senior Day

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State manufactured runs in four consecutive innings and used the home run ball to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma on Senior Day, 8-6. The Reddies (27-18, 19-11 GAC) complete the three game sweep of SWOSU (23-20, 11-18), and improved their winning streak to six games.

The Reddies will play their final GAC series of the regular season next weekend when they travel across the street to face rival Ouachita Baptist for a three-game series at Rab Rodgers Field.

Southwestern struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Hunter Smith and a two out RBI single from Ty Eastwood, but the Reddies got a run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Luke Rice RBI groundout. The back and forth scoring continued in the 4th inning, with SWOSU getting a run on a Connor Jeffers double, and the Reddies answering with a Dylan Block RBI ground out. Henderson State threatened to score more in the frame, loading the bases after two batters were hit by pitches and advanced on one of three SWOSU wild pitches, but were unable to capitalize, stranding all three runners.

Julio Vasquez tied the game for the Reddies in the fifth inning with an RBI single, but the sixth inning was where HSU blew the game open, as Nate Moore and Jeremy Schork hit home runs as part of a four run inning. Schork's three run blast brought him to within one of the single season team home run record. HSU tacked on a run in the eighth inning on an Alex Galvan single and a two-base error that allowed Schork to score.

Reese Weaks started on the mound for Henderson State; the senior right hander worked five innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking five. Caleb Wilson (3-0) earned the win in relief. The redshirt senior worked a perfect sixth and seventh inning, retiring all six batters he faced. Luke Carter and Baylor Brumley each faced two batters in the eighth inning, in which SWOSU's Reece Burke hit a three run home run to bring the Bulldogs to within one before Mitchell Szczygiel retired the final two batters to preserve the one run Henderson State advantage. Payton Byrd (12) worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Cal Jones and Louis Holt collected two hits each for the Reddies, while Holt, Vasquez, and Luke Farrar each reached on a hit by pitch; Farrar (6) stole a base as well in his only time aboard.

Prior to the game, one of the largest Reddie senior classes ever was honored, as 22 players were honored in what could be their last game at Clyde Berry Field, and the 2025 Clyde Berry Award was presented to Reddie Baseball alumnus Jim Gatewood.
