Reddie Offense Explosive in 50-30 Win Over West Georgia

Nick Johnson
Henderson State had its highest offensive output of the season as the Reddies routed former Gulf South Conference opponent West Georgia, 50-30 Saturday in Carrollton, Ga.

Jarvis Smith collected 183 yards rushing on 19 carries, and scored three touchdowns on the afternoon. Smith's total was the fifth-highest single-game total by a Reddie in school history with the record being 234 yards by Blake
Christenson against Southern Arkansas in 2002.

Henderson began things on its first offensive possession moving the ball at will, driving 75 yards on 12 plays capped off by a 19-yard run by Smith for the first score of the game. It was Henderson's first score on its opening drive of the year, and only the second score of the first quarter this season.

After a field goal cut the Reddie lead to 7-3, Henderson began moving the ball again against the West Georgia defense.

The Reddie offense continued to use its ground game to control the football. Henderson moved the ball 61 yards on seven plays with Smith scoring on a 16-yard run to increase the lead to 14-3.

West Georgia, 2-2 on the season, answered on its next possession as Emmanuel Taylor broke loose for a 41-yard score, but the extra-point failed.

Leading 14-9, the Reddies increased their lead to 28-9 on an 18-yard run by Israel Valentine and a 4-yard run by Smith for his third score of the game.
UWG, however, took advantage of a 14-yard punt by Christian Latoof and scored on a 6-yard pass from Taylor to Bobby Burum with 1 second remaining in the half to cut the Henderson lead to 28-16 at the break.

Henderson, 2-3 on the year, continued the onslaught in the second-half with the defense getting into the scoring act.

Antonio Leak blocked a Davis Brackett punt for a safety, followed by an 8-yard pass from Kevin Rodgers to Nick Johnson to increase the Henderson lead to 37-16.

Henderson increased the lead to 40-16 on a 24-yard field goal, then Marquis Russell recovered a UWG fumble and went 10-yards to make the score 47-16 at the end of the third quarter.

The Reddie offense totaled 447 yards including 254 yards rushing.
Kevin Rodgers had a big day completing 18-of-24 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, while Valentine rushed for 52 yards and totaled 97 yards in kickoff returns.

The Henderson State defense was constantly in the Wolves' backfield, totaling eight tackles for lost yardage and two sacks.

Aaron Plante had six tackles, while Glennon Bobo had five stops. Leak ended the day with three tackles for lost yardage, a quarterback hurry, and a blocked punt.

The win by the Reddies was the sixth-straight victory over West Georgia.
