Lady Red Wave Sweeps Competition, Beats Centenary 127-78

Henderson State's women's swim team swept all 11 events en route to a 127-78 win over Centenary, Saturday in Shreveport, La.

The Red Wave also had solid performances winning five events but Henderson was edged by the Gents 106-99.

Jeanne Miller, Natalie Gallant, Chelsea Leary, and Lauren Sutton all won two individual events to lead Henderson.

Miller took first-place in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events, having times of 5:21.34 in the 500 and 11:00.04 in the 1000.

Sutton won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:59.65 and followed with a win in the 100 freestyle by touching the wall in 54.78.

Gallant continued her brilliant career by winning the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.12, then capturing first in the 100 butterfly by clocking in at 59.45.

Leary easily claimed victory in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.19, four seconds faster than her competition. She returned later in the day to claim the 100 backstroke having a time of 1:00.33.

Catie Morrow won the remaining individual event for Henderson, winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.33.

Henderson opened the day with the team of Leary, Morrow, Mary Andrews, and Hannah Weise winning the 200 medley relay by finishing with a time of 1:51.81.
In the final event, Sutton, Miller, Weise, and Gallant out-swam the competition in the 200 freestyle relay having a time of 1:41.52.

“Our women did a fantastic job,” said Coach Coak Matthews. “I am not sure that we have ever won all events in one single meet in my 29+ seasons at HSU, but the women did it today.”

The men's competition went back and forth, with Centenary winning the first two and last two events of the meet to claim the win.

Adam Milecz picked up the Red Wave's first win by claiming the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.79.

In the 200 individual medley, Nick James edged Centenary's Ross Oliver to take first-place having a time of 1:59.75, while Terrance Fogle claimed the 100 freestyle event in a time of 47.82.

James returned later in the day to win his second event. James swam the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.22 narrowly beating Oliver who finished with a time of 54.90.

Robert Fisher also claimed an individual event by winning the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:53.27.

“Our men fell behind early and then fought really hard to take a small lead with just two events to go, but they were just too strong for us in those two particular events,” said Matthews. “Basically, they outscored us by enough in the first two and last two to win the meet. We pretty much won the middle, but it wasn't enough. I was really proud of the way we fought and raced to get back in the meet when things looked pretty bleak at the beginning.”

Henderson will return to the poll Nov. 11-12 in Bryant, Ark. for the HSU Invitational.
