Henderson State ran into a hot shooting Arkansas-Monticello team as the Boll Weevils beat the Reddies 85-70, Thursday in Monticello, Ark.
The Boll Weevils, 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Great American Conference, hit 74 percent of their shots from the field in the second-half converting on 20-of-27 attempts.
Leading 17-14 with 11:21 left in the first half, the Reddies made just four of their next 15 field goal attempts as Arkansas-Monticello outscored Henderson 20-10 in the final 10 minutes to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Henderson was able to draw within a bucket to begin the second-half as
Andrew Ensley drove the lane for a pair of layups, and
Melvin Haynes hit a 3-point field goal to make the score 39-37 with 17:17 to play in the game.
Henderson attempted to keep pace with UAM in the second half by making 17 of 29 shots for 58 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Boll Weevils, however, pulled away from the Reddies in the final nine minutes of the game converting on 14 of their final 15 field goals of the game including 10 straight.
Ensley led the Reddies with 27 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the floor. The senior also pulled down four rebounds.
Both Haynes and
Denzel Lyles were 4-of-10 from the floor and totaled 12 points each.
Five Boll Weevils scored in double-figure including Kevin Forge who had a game-high 28 points.
Henderson State ended the game shooting 49 percent from the field making 27 of 55 attempts, while UAM was 34 of 60 for 57 percent.
The Reddies will continue their five game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Magnolia, Ark. to face Southern Arkansas with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
