ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State University women's basketball team earned its second victory of the season by holding off a late run by the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (0-4) and walked away with a 61-55 win Saturday evening at the Duke Wells Center.
In the game, HSU had four scorers in double figures, led by
Aungelique Sledge (West Helena, Ark.) with 16 points on 6-for-15 shooting. The junior started the game and also brought in 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.
Krystal Beachum (Sr., Mexia, Texas) dished a team-best three assists to go with 16 points.
Both
Taylor Washington (Fr., Arlington, Texas) and
Tiara Davis (So., Longview, Texas) posted eight of their 11 points in the second half as HSU outscored UAFS, 36-35.
Sledge drove to the basket to open up the game and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play to set the tone for the game. At the 13:01 mark, junior transfer
Jasmine Settles (Memphis, Tenn.) hit her first free throw as the Lady Reddies saw their biggest lead in the first half, 12-4.
Henderson State saw their lead disappear after Arkansas-Fort Smith went on a 13-2 run and took their biggest lead of the game, 17-14 with 8:04 left in the first half.
HSU headed into the locker room with a five point lead, 25-20, at the half.
The Lady Reddies would begin to piece the puzzle together in the second half. HSU broke out on a 12-2 run in the first five minutes and held a 15 point lead. They would build their largest lead of the game with a little over nine minutes left at 46-29.
A barrage of turnovers by HSU kept Arkansas-Fort Smith in the game, as the Lady Lions only trailed by four with 36 seconds left in the game. Washington drained both of her free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the win for Henderson State.
The Lady Reddies will return to the road to compete in their first Great American Conference game on Thursday, Nov. 21 to face Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 5:30 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
