A late second half run lifted Arkansas-Monticello to a 79-71 win over Henderson State, Saturday in Monticello, Ark.
With Henderson State leading 60-54, the Weevils would go on a 19-1 spurt including making eight straight field goals to record the win.
Both teams started off the game slow before UAM would take a 13-8 lead following baskets by Richard Benedyth and Vicktor Arnick.
The Reddies, 3-10 overall and 2-6 in the GAC, would then go on a 9-1 run to take a 17-14 lead with
Kaylon Tappin scoring six straight points to spark Henderson.
UAM would miss nine straight field goal attempts, but the Reddies could not take advantage of the Weevils' misfortunes as Henderson made just 1-of-6 field goals.
Arnick would give the Weevils the lead back with a field goal at the 6:30 mark to make the score 18-17.
UAM would stretch its lead to 31-26 with 2:11 left in the half before Tappin busted a 3point field goal with Eric Daily tying the score at 31-31 with a pair of free throws.
Benedyth would break the tie with a 3-point field goal, but Tappin would slice his way through the lane for a layup just before the end of the half as UAM would take a 34-33 lead into the locker room at the break.
The lead would change hands several times to begin the second half before
Kevin Kozan hit his first 3-point field goal of the game, followed by another trey by Tappin to put Henderson on top 54-48 with just under 10 minutes left to play.
HSU would build a 60-54 lead, but the Weevils responded with the 19-1run as Henderson play for more than five minutes without a field goal.
Tappin would finish with a career-high 32 points which included four 3-point field goals. Kozan added 12 points with
Matt Panaggio scoring 7 points.
Four Weevils scored in double-figures led by Arnick with 24 points, while Peterson added 17.
Henderson shot 47 percent for the game making 25-of-53 field goals, while UAM was 26-of-56 for 46 percent from the floor. The Weevils used 10 3-point field goals as well as 17-of-25 free throws to aide in the victory.
The Reddies will next play host to Ouachita Baptist on Monday with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
