HSU Uses Strong Defensive Performance to Defeat Harding 66-62 on Saturday

The Henderson State women's basketball team held Harding to 34 percent shooting on Saturday night, and used a strong defensive performance to come away with a 66-62 Great American Conference victory in Searcy.

Henderson State's last victory in Searcy came on Jan. 28, 2006, as HSU snapped a nine game road losing streak with the win.

HSU(8-9, 7-4 GAC) would lead at the break 31-28, and convert 19 points off of Harding(9-5, 7-3 GAC) miscues to preserve the road victory.

In a game that saw nine lead changes, the Reddies would lead by as much as eight after Victoria Stewart nailed a three-pointer to give HSU a 62-54 lead at the 3:37 mark of the final quarter.

Harding would climb within two with 39 seconds remaining after a pair of Sydney Layrock free throws to make the score 64-62 in favor of HSU, but two clutch free throws by Henderson's Moe Bedford with just three seconds remaining would push the Reddies to victory.

HSU finished the game knocking down 22-of-57 attempts from the field for 39 percent shooting, and shot an impressive 16-of-19 from the foul line for 84 percent.

The Reddies dished out 11 team assists in the contest, while limiting Harding to eight and forcing 15 Lady Bisons turnovers.

Individually, Dulincia Keener led the way for HSU on the night with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field while also pulling down nine boards.

Sophomore Haleigh Henson also provided a strong spark offensively making 4-of-12 attempts and 3-of-10 from beyond-the-arc as she had 14 points, while Stewart pitched in 13 points and nine rebounds.

HSU also got a strong performance from Makyndra Simmons and Lexis Weber off the bench, as the two score six points each and Simmons grabbed six rebounds.

Henderson State will return to action on Thursday at home to begin the second half of the conference slate, as the Reddies take on Southern Nazarene with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
