The Henderson State volleyball team fell on Tuesday night to Ouachita Baptist 3-1 (24-26, 23-25, 25-14, 21-25). The loss drops Henderson to 12-13 on the year and 7-6 in the Great American Conference.
The Reddies were led by sophomore Sharon Tukuaoga, who had 21 kills in defeat.
The first set began slowly for the Reddies, as Ouachita jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Henderson rallied with an 8-4 run of their own to knot things up at 8-8, but with the score tied at 11-11, OBU ripped off a 6-0 stretch to wrench the momentum away from the Reddies and grab a 17-11 advantage. Henderson would again respond, though, winning eight of the next ten points to again tie the score at 19-19. From there it was neck and neck, with OBU eventually gaining the upper hand 24-23. The Reddies staved off the first set point, but the Tigers took the next two to win 26-24.
The Reddies came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 12-7 lead early, but the Tigers answered with a quick 7-1 run to regain a 14-13 lead. The two teams battled over the next ten points, but with the score tied at 23-23, OBU took advantage of back-to-back Reddies errors to take the second set 25-23 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
With its back against the wall, Henderson got off to a fast start once again in the third set, going on a 10-2 run to start the game. The Tigers tried to cut into the lead, at point cutting the deficit to 15-11, but the Reddies would not be denied for a third straight set, as they went on a furious 10-3 run to propel them to a 25-14 win.
With the momentum back on their side, the Reddies ran out to an early lead for the third straight set, opening the game on a 7-4 run. OBU countered, however, running off a 6-1 stretch to retake the lead 10-8. Henderson rallied and tied the game 15-15, but a 6-1 Tigers run pushed the Reddies to the brink again at 21-16. The Reddies tried for one final rally, cutting the lead to 23-21, but the Tigers proved to be too much, taking the final points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
The loss drops Henderson to 12-13 on the year and 7-6 in the Great American Conference.
The Reddies next game is Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. against Harding in Searcy, Arkansas.
