Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short as Reddies Lose to OBU 30-27

Henderson State's fourth-quarter rally fell short as Ouachita Baptist escaped Carpenter-Haygood Stadium/Ruggles Field with a 30-27 win in the 90th edition of the Battle of the Ravine in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Trailing 27-14 entering the fourth-quarter, the Reddies turned to quarterback Evan Lassiter to energize the Henderson offense which failed to score in the third-quarter and managed just 50 yards in the period.

Lassiter quickly moved the Reddies 82-yards on 9-plays capped off by a 1-yard run by the junior from Coral Springs, Fla.

Lassiter completed 5-of-6 passes for 68 yards during the drive including a 27-yard toss to Courtney Whitehead and a 21-yard pass to Darion Gray.

The Tigers, 7-4 on the season, answered with a 40-yard field goal by Cole Antley to push the lead back to 30-20 with 4:21 to play in the game.

Again Lassiter wasted little time moving the Reddies downfield connecting with Ben Johnson for a 20-yard pick-up and a 33-yard scoring toss to Jaquan Cole with 3:22 left in the game. The drive took just 59 seconds and covered 72 yards on 4 plays.

The Reddie defense forced OBU to punt and Shelton Wooley had a 54-yard boot that carried Al Lasker back to the Henderson 2.

The Reddies turned to Lassiter again as Henderson was 98 yards away from paydirt and had just 1:24 to work. Henderson converted on a 4th-and-10 when Lassiter completed a 13-yard pass to Whitehead.

On the next play Lassiter attempted to connect with Johnson deep into OBU territory, but OBU's Jordan Jones made a huge defensive play to knock the ball out of Johnson's hands.

On fourth-down, the Tigers pressured Lassiter and forced a fumble to end the game.

The game began with the Tigers taking the opening kickoff and proceeding to move downfield deep into Reddie territory.

On the 13th play of the drive from the Henderson 6, Drew Harris lost handle of the football with Reddie linebacker Cameron Schulz recovering the loose pigskin.

Reddie starting quarterback Andrew Black then went to work orchestrating a 10-play 94-yard drive capped off by a 24-yard scoring toss to Whitehead.

Black went 5-for-5 on the drive for 97 yards including three passes to Johnson for 61 yards.

The Tigers tied the score early in the second quarter as Harris broke free for a 31 yard scamper with 13:43 left in the half.

Henderson answered as the Reddies went 83 yards on 7 plays with Cole scoring from 4 yards out. Big plays in the drive included a 29-yard reception by Al Lasker and a 19-yard catch by Jacoby Lewis to convert on 3rd-and-10.

OBU had a chance to cut into the Reddie lead on its next possession, but Cole Antley's 28-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright.

The Tigers, however, forced a Reddie fumble at the Henderson 38 with Khairan Stafford recovering Black's miscue.

OBU took over with 2:40 left in the half and scored on a 3rd-and-17 when Lucas Reed hit La'Darius McElroy for a 20-yard score with 37 seconds left in the half.

Following a 41-yard punt by Shelton Wooley that was downed at the Reddie 4, OBU's Demetric Jennings tackled Jeremy Wilson in the end zone for a safety to put OBU on top 16-14.

Antley would add a 41-yard field goal to make the score 19-14 with 9:42 left in the third-quarter.

OBU would tack on another touchdown on its next possession as Reed would rush up the middle for a 3-yard score to cap off a 13-play, 92-yard drive that took 6:34 off the clock.

Black finished the game with 190 yards on 14-of-21 passing while rushing for 55 yards.

Lassiter compiled 141 yards completing 10-of-15 passes in the final quarter, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another.

Johnson led the Reddie receivers with 81 yards on four catches.

Defensively, Gary Vines had 10 tackles while Cameron Sonnier had 8 stops including 2 for lost yardage.

Cameron Schulz had a huge day defensively with seven tackles, two for lost yardage and a fumble recovery.

Henderson finishes the regular-season with an 8-3 record and is the only collegiate football program in Arkansas to record eight of more wins in five consecutive years.
