A third quarter surge led Mississippi College to a 74-72 come-from-behind victory over Henderson State Tuesday in women's basketball action in Clinton, Miss.
After leading 41-34 at the half following
Haleigh Henson's fourth 3-point field goal of the opening 20 minutes, Mississippi College outscored Henderson 24-16 in the third quarter to take a 58-57 lead entering the final period of play.
Henderson made just 4-of-19 shot in the period, while Mississippi College was 10-of-17 from the floor.
The Reddies began the final period on a 6-0 run as
Pink Jones, Henson and
Lexis Weber would hit consecutive jumpers to put Henderson on top 63-58 with 8:02 left to play.
The Choctaws went on a 6-0 run of their own midway through the quarter to regain the lead at 66-65 with 4:29 remaining.
Jones gave Henderson a 72-70 lead with a layup with 58 seconds remaining, but a traditional 3-point play by Ashley Minor with 41 seconds left put the Choctaws back on top 73-72.
Henderson could not score down the stretch and the Choctaws would hold on for the win.
The Reddies made just 9-of-33 shots from the field in the second half for 27 percent. The Lady Choctaws took advantage of Henderson's shooting woes by converting on 16-of-34 attempts for just under 50 percent shooting.
Henson led the Reddies with 22 points including 5-of-11 from the 3-point arc. Jones followed with 17 points while
Hailey Estes added 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Weber recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Henderson had shooting difficulties making just 24-of-68 attempts from the field for 35 percent shooting, while Mississippi College converted on 47 percent knocking down 30-of-64 attempts.
Henderson State, 2-3 on the year, will travel to Fort Smith on Saturday to face Arkansas-Fort Smith with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
