Sydney Skelton broke the school record for digs in a four-set match with 54 and
Kamra Jackson tallied 14 kills, but the Henderson State volleyball team lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 21-25) to Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday night in Monticello, Arkansas.
The first set was controlled by UAM, as they opened on a 9-5 run which they eventually turned into a 17-11 lead. Henderson tried to narrow the gap, and used an 8-2 run to knot things up at 19-19, but the Blossoms were able to close strong with a 6-2 spurt to win game one 25-21.
The Reddies came out strong in game two, and opened up a 9-3 lead early. UAM responded quickly, though, with a 9-3 stretch of their own to tie the set at 12-12. The teams battled over the next several points but found themselves still tied at 20-20 until a Blossoms' run put UAM up 23-20 and threatened to put Henderson in a 0-2 hole. The Reddies would not let that happen, as they went on a 5-0 run, capped off by a
Kamra Jackson winner, to take the second set 25-23.
Henderson started hot again in the third set and raced out to a 12-7 advantage. From there, the Blossoms seized momentum by going on a 14-4 run to take a 21-16 lead. Much like the first set, the Reddies rallied and at one point cut the UAM lead to 23-22, but the Blossoms again closed things out, taking the next two points to win 25-22 and go up 2-1 in the match.
Game four was tight early, but with the teams tied at 10-10, UAM went on an 8-3 run to grab control of the set and the match at 18-13. Henderson would not go away quietly, and cut the lead to 18-16, but UAM would not let the Reddies get any closer than that, as they closed the game and match out with a 25-21 fourth set victory.
Skelton's 54 digs is the most ever by a Reddie volleyball player in a four-set match, breaking the previous record of 50, set by Bethany Wright in 2007. Wright holds the school-record for digs in a match with 55, which she achieved in a five-set match.
Sharon Tukuaoga had 11 kills, while Jesse Jacoby had 10 for Henderson in defeat. The loss drops the Reddies to 7-8 in the Great American Conference with one regular season match remaining.
Henderson's next match is Senior Night, this Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Duke Wells Center against Southern Arkansas at 6 p.m.
