Reddies Pick Up Rare Win at Southeastern Oklahoma

For the first time since 2002, Henderson State picked up a rare road win against Southeastern Oklahoma 84-75, Saturday in Durant, Okla.

The Reddies, 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Great American Conference ended a six-game losing streak to the Storm in games played in the Sooner State.

Chris Hawkins and Kaylon Tappin led the Reddies with 24 points each, with Kevin Kozan adding 17 points.

Hawkins also led the Reddies in rebounding with nine boards, while Tappin was 12-of-14 from the foul line.

Henderson led for most of the first half building a 27-19 advantage with 5:04 remaining. The Storm, with the help of a pair of 3-pointers by Jett Jobe, would rally to tie the score at 36-36 at halftime.

After SOSU took a 40-38 lead early in the second half, Tappin jump started the Reddies with a 3-point field goal to send the Reddies on a 9-0 run to put Henderson on top 47-40.

Layups by Hawkins and Ben Marello, along with a 15-foot jumper by Kozan would aid in the run.

Following a Hawkins dunk to put Henderson out in front by 10 with 10:46 remaining, Southeastern scored eight straight points cutting the deficit to a single possession.

The teams traded leads four times the next four minutes before Henderson went on an 11-4 run with the help of some solid free throw shooting down the stretch as Henderson connected on 7-of-8 freebies.

Tappin put Henderson up 79-72 with 1:03 remaining following a layup and free throw, with Kozan also having a layup and two free throws. Tappin sealed the game with a dunk for the final tally.

Henderson shot 50 percent from the field knocking down 27-of-54 field goals, while Southeastern was true on 27-of-61 field goals for 44 percent.

Free throw shooting played a big role in the contest as the Reddies were 26-of-33 from the charity stripe for 79 percent, while the Storm hit 14-of-19 free throws for 74 percent.

Henderson returns home next Saturday for a non-conference contest against Dallas Christian with the tipoff set for 2 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
