Henderson State completed a three-game sweep of Arkansas Tech as the Reddies beat the Wonder Boys 6-3 and 4-3, Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Â
The Reddies, 8-8 overall and 5-1 in the Great American Conference, used timely hitting and again got some solid pitching performances to record the first series sweep of ATU since the teams began playing three-game conference series' in 1999.
Â
After a thrilling 6-5 extra-inning win on Friday to open the series, Henderson would win the finale in similar fashion.
Â
With Arkansas Tech leading 3-1 in the final inning, the Reddie offense came to life as Jake Gaul and pinch-hitter
Joseph Gary began the frame with back-to-back singles.
Alex Morgan entered the game to run for Gaul, while
Byrious Hughes replaced Gary.
Â
Alan Hall then reached on an infield single to load the bases and set the stage for
Hunter Mayall.
Â
Mayall, the senior from Bryant, Ark., smacked a single up the middle that scored two runs to tie the score at 3-3 with both runners advancing a base on the throw home.
Â
Jordan Taylor would hit a ground ball to second with Hall getting caught in a run down between third and home to allow Taylor to advance to second and Mayall to third.
Â
With one out
Hayden Lessenberry would hit a hard ground ball to ATU pitcher Jesse Harbin who was forced to throw home to stop Henderson from scoring the game-winning run. However, Mayall broke immediately and was able to beat the throw.
Â
Zach Eschberger went the distance on the mound for Henderson to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Â
In the opener, the Reddies used a three-run seventh-inning to rally and beat the Wonder Boys.
Â
AJ Kruzel got the Reddies going in the second-inning as he led off the inning with a double and scored the first run when
Jared Gage grounded out to second base.
Â
Tech would load the bases in the fourth-inning with three straight singles, but Reddie pitcher
Chris Hunt would get out of the jam when he struck out the side.
Â
ATU tied score in the fifth, but the Reddies responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Gaul singled followed by a two-run homer by
Matt Evans to make the score 3-1.
Â
The Wonder Boys would plate two runs in the seventh to tie the score with Parker O'Dell having a double and Kaleb Warden providing a RBI single.
Â
The Reddie seventh began with Morgan reaching on a walk and Gaul smacking a single up the middle to put runners on the corners for Evans.
Â
Evans collected his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice bunt to score Morgan and give HSU a 4-3 lead.
Â
The inning continued as Hall laced a single to left field to score Gaul. Hall then stole second and advanced to third on an error before Mayall hit a sacrifice fly to score Hall with the final run.
Â
Hunt would pitch 6 2/3 innings surrendering seven hits while striking out six batters in a no decision.
Â
Jay Hawley entered the game in the seventh for Hunt and would get the Reddies out of the seventh-inning to pick up the win.
Â
Blake Patterson pitched a flawless eighth striking out a pair of batters with
Nick Vanthillo pitching the ninth retiring all three batters he faced to pick up his second save of the year.
Â
Kruzel led the Reddies in the three-game series going 6-for-11 with three doubles, while Mayall, Hall and Taylor had four hits each.
Â
Henderson State will next play host to Harding in a non-conference affair on Tuesday with first pitch set for 6 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
