Henderson State opened its softball season with a 3-1 win over Emporia State followed by a 6-4 victory over Central Missouri, Friday at the Southeastern Oklahoma Shootout in Durant, Okla.
In the opening game, Henderson got on the board first in the third-inning as
Caroline Cullins reached on an error and stole second.
After
Ashlyn White reached on Emporia's second error of the inning,
Keirsten Seahorn would score Cullins on a sacrifice fly to put the Reddies on top 1-0.
The Reddies would add to their lead in the sixth-inning as
Jordan Griffith would lead off the frame with a walk. With one-out,
Alexis Morton would reach on an error allowing pinch runner
Lakin Wolever to advance to third, while Morton cruised into second.
White would then deliver a two-out single to score both runners and put Henderson on top 3-0.
Emporia would strike for an unearned run in the sixth-inning but HSU starting pitcher
Madison Calvert would get out of the inning without any more damage being done.
White would enter the seventh to pitch for Calvert and strike out two batters to pick up the save a preserve the win for Calvert.
Calvert surrendered five hits and struck out two batters in picking up her first victory of the year.
Both teams had six hits in the game with
Morgan South leading Henderson going 2-for-3 in the game.
Against Central Missouri, the Reddies banged out 10 hits and limited the Jennies to just two safeties in picking up the win.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, Henderson tied the score on a Griffith base hit that scored
Destiny Garza who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Reddies tacked on two more runs in the third-inning as Cullins reached on a double and advanced to third on a Morton single. Seahorn would give the Reddies lead with a base hit of her own to score Cullins.
Garza would make the score 3-1 with her second hit of the game that plated Morton.
Henderson would increase its lead to 6-1 as Griffith led off the fourth-inning with a double and scored on an
Ashleigh Erb single.
Michelle Sorensen would then reach on a base hit advancing Erb to second.
The Reddies would score the second run of the inning when White walked with the bases loaded
Garza would pick up her second RBI of the game as she scored Morton on a single for the final run of the inning.
Central Missouri would score two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth before White entered the game in relief of Sorensen who started in the circle for the Reddies.
Sorensen exited after allowing just two hits and striking out two hitters. White struck out two of the four batters she faced to pick up her second save of the day and secure the win for Sorensen.
Henderson continues the tournament on Saturday with a pair games beginning with a contest with Central Oklahoma at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. game against Pittsburg State.
