HSU Finishes Southeastern Oklahoma Shootout with Wins Over Emporia and MSSU

Henderson State finished the Southeastern Oklahoma Softball Shootout with wins over Emporia State and Missouri Southern State in Durant, Okla. on Sunday.

The Reddies opened the final day with a 1-0 decision over Emporia State before beating MSSU 3-1 to finish with a 4-2 record in the tournament.

In game one against ESU, the Reddies totaled three hits with Courtney Warren having a pair of singles and Keirsten Seahorn going 1-for-3.

Henderson broke a scoreless tie in the fifth-inning as Alexis Morton reached on a one-out error and later scored on a Warren single.

Michelle Sorensen pitched a no-hitter and faced three batters above the minimum with all reaching on walks. The sophomore from Sherwood, Ark. struck out nine batters in the process to improve to 2-1 on the year.

In the final game of the tournament, Henderson jumped out to a 3-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the first-inning and another in the second.

Caroline Cullins opened the game with a single to left field to set the tone for the Reddies. Cullins would then steal second and advanced to third when Courtney Warren reached on a MSSU fielding error.

With one-out, Olivia Trapp would single to left field to drive in both Warren and Cullins for the first two runs of the game.

In the Reddie second, Henderson would benefit from another Missouri Southern miscue as Ashleigh Erb led off the frame with a walk and would advance on a sacrifice bunt by Shayla Wright which was also mishandle allowing Erb to advance to third. Erb would score on a steal attempt by Wright to increase the lead to 3-0.

MSSU would score a run in the third, but HSU pitcher Madison Calvert held the Lions in check the rest of the way going the distance. Calvert surrendered four hits to get the win and improve to 2-1 on the year.

Henderson will next travel to Bentonville, Ark. to participate in the 8 States Invitational beginning Friday. The Reddies open with a 9 a.m. affair against Emporia State followed by a contest with Truman State at 1 p.m.
