Henderson State handed Southern Arkansas only its third loss of the season as the Reddie softball team took the second game of a double-header 3-2, Friday in Magnolia, Ark.
Southern Arkansas, 24-3 and 16-3 in the Great American Conference, won the opener in eight innings 2-1.
The Muleriders have one of the most powerful offenses in the country, averaging nearly eight runs per game while belting out 43 home runs this season. However, Henderson (18-16 and 9-13) limited SAU to its fewest runs in a double-header all season.
Trailing 2-1 in the top half of the seventh-inning of game two,
Shayla Wright was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Courtney Warren walked and both would advance on a
Caroline Cullins sacrifice bunt.
With one-out,
Ashlyn White hit a single to right field to score both runners and put the Reddies on top.
Michelle Sorensen relieved HSU starting pitcher
Madison Calvert and retired the side in order to secure the win for the Reddies.
Calvert pitched five innings, allowed two runs on six hits while striking out a pair of batters.
Cullins had two of Henderson's seven hits including driving home Henderson's first run in the fifth-inning.
Olivia Trapp also had two hits for the Reddies.
In the opener, SAU led 1-0 entering the seventh-inning. However, White the reigning NFCA National Player of the Week, hit a solo home run to centerfield to tie the score at 1-1.
Southern Arkansas would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth-inning when Ashton Atwell hit a two-out double to score Darian Harris who singled earlier in the inning.
The two teams will finish the four-game series with a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m. in Magnolia.
