Henderson State got a stellar pitching performance from
Zach Eschberger as the Reddies beat Southern Arkansas 4-1 to win the series from the Muleriders, Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Southern Arkansas, 19-11 overall and 11-7 in the Great American Conference, won Saturday's first game 12-3 to salvage one game of the three-game series.
In the final game, Eschberger went the distance limiting SAU to just three hits surrendering the only run in the final inning as he walked a pair of pinch-hitters and gave up a RBI single to Michael Page.
The freshman southpaw from Bullard, Texas struck out seven Muleriders and allowed just three hits improving to 5-3 on the season and 5-1 in GAC play.
The Reddies, 14-17 and 10-8, gave Eschberger some confidence by scoring four runs in the first-inning.
Hunter Mayall led things off with a single followed by
Jordan Taylor reaching on a walk.
AJ Kruzel loaded the bases when he executed a perfect bunt for a single with no-outs.
Tadarious Hawkins, who was 6-for-12 in the series, reached on a fielder's choice that plated Mayall with the first run of the game.
Taylor would score on a passed ball followed by
Joseph Gary reaching base when he was hit by a pitch.
Luke McGuire would pick up his first two RBIs of the season when he hit a triple to the right-centerfield power alley to score two more runs and put the Reddies on top 4-0.
Eschberger was cruising through the SAU lineup until the seventh-inning when the Muleriders sent to the plate three straight pinch-hitters.
With two outs and a pair of runners on base, SAU was down to its final strike when Page ended the shutout with a single. The Muleriders would again load the bases, but Eschberger was able to get Keaton Miller to ground out to Kruzel and end the game.
In game one, SAU scored four runs in the first-inning and added seven more in the ninth as the Muleriders won 12-3.
Henderson had numerous opportunities having the bases loaded three times but the Reddies were unable to score. The Reddies would strand 14 base runners in the game.
With SAU leading 5-3 in the ninth, the Reddies were forced to use three pitchers in the inning as the Henderson hurlers walked six batters and hit two that assisted the Muleriders.
The Reddies had 10 hits in the game with Hawkins going 3-for-5 while Taylor was 2-for-3 with a double.
The Reddies will next play host to Delta State in a double-header on Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.  Â
