Reddies Take Down No. 14 Delta State 3-1

Another masterful pitching performance by a rookie helped lead Henderson State to a 3-1 victory over No. 14 Delta State Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field.

Kris Priddy went seven complete innings, scattering six hits and striking out a pair of batters to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The biggest obstacle for the freshman from Terrell, Texas came in the third inning as DSU loaded the bases with two-outs.

A double by Trent Giambrone got things started for the Statesmen. Priddy then hit both Will Robertson and Ethan Gill to load the bases. DSU's lone run came when Ben Pickard walked to plate Giambrone.

Priddy, however, would get out of the inning as he coaxed Jacob Swiney to fly out to centerfield.

The Reddies, 15-17 on the season, would respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Jared Gage walked and advanced on a wild pitch by DSU starter Jacob Howell.

After a walk was issued to Hunter Mayall, Jordan Taylor delivered a two-out single to right field to score Gage and tie the score at 1-1.

The Reddies would add two more runs in the fifth-inning scoring both runs with two outs.

Mayall would again walk to get things started with Taylor supplying a double to deep left field that scored Mayall from first base.

AJ Kruzel then stepped up and slapped a single to left field to score Taylor for the final run of the game.

Delta State, No. 14 in the NCBWA Top 25 and No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll, mounted a threat in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Blake Patterson entered the game to begin the eighth-inning on the mound for the Reddies and retired the first batter he faced.

However the Statesmen would get a single from Colton Welch followed by a walk to Erick Santiago. Patterson was able to get Dakota Glore to hit a soft grounder to Kruzel at second base. Kruzel made the flip to second base, but Frank Chiolino's throw to first was not in time to retire Glore.

Patterson would record the final out as Brandon Cummins fouled out to left field to end the inning.

Delta State, 20-10 on the year, faced HSU reliever Nick Vanthillo in the ninth-inning.

Vanthillo walked Giambrone to lead off the inning with Robertson following with a single.

The senior from Brasschat, Belgium buckled down and struck out Gill for the first out of the inning. Vanthillo would pick up his fifth save of the year as he got Ben Pickard to ground to second with Kruzel and Chiolino executing the double play to perfection.

Taylor had two of Henderson's seven hits on the afternoon to go along with a pair of runs batted in.

The Reddies will travel to Weatherford, Okla. for a three-game Great American Conference series beginning Friday at 2 p.m.
