Henderson State extended its winning streak to six games as the Reddies swept a double-header from Southern Nazarene 7-4 and 16-6, Friday in Bethany, Okla.
The Reddies, 22-19 overall and 16-10 in the Great American Conference, clubbed out 26 hits in the twin bill with
Hayden Lessenberry leading the way going 7-for-9 with seven runs batted in, two home runs and a double.
In the opener, the Reddies jumped out to a 4-0 lead beginning with a run in the first-inning via a run-scoring double by
Jordan Taylor.
The Reddies put together three hits in the second-inning getting a RBI single by
Luke McGuire and a double by
Joseph Gary that scored McGuire.
Lessenberry was responsible for the lone run in the third frame as the junior from Bryant, Ark. hit a solo home run.
Southern Nazarene would rally and tie the score in the seventh-inning scoring three runs with the help of a home run by Jeff Harris.
The Reddies would respond in the top of the eighth-inning as Lessenberry and Jake Gaul had back-to-back singles followed by a walk issued to
Jared Gage to load the bases.
McGuire provided a single to right field to score the first run, followed by Gary being hit by a pitch and a fielder's choice by
Hunter Mayall that forced home two more runs.
That is all the Reddies needed as pitchers
Blake Patterson and
Nick Vanthillo would hold the Crimson Storm in check the remainder of the game.
Luke Tebbetts started the game on the mound for the Reddies and went 6.1 innings allowing four hits and striking out eight batters in a no decision.
Patterson pitched 1.2 innings striking out two batters and would pick up the win to improve to 3-3 on the year while Vanthillo pitched the final inning to pick up his eighth save of the year.
In the nightcap, the Reddies would score early and often scoring four runs in the first and two more in the second.
Lessenberry had a two-run single in the first with Kruzel also scoring a run with a base hit in the opening inning.
Kruzel then smacked a two-run blast in the second, before SNU responded for three runs in the bottom of the second.
After being held scoreless in the third, the Reddies exploded for four more runs in the fourth as Taylor provided a run-scoring single with Lessenberry hitting his second home run of the day, this time for three runs.
Henderson manufactured two more runs in the fifth with the help of four walks in the inning. The Reddies tacked on four additional runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Henderson totaled 14 hits in the game with Mayall going 3-for-4 while scoring four runs, Taylor having three hits in as many at bats along with a pair of RBI, and Kruzel also having three safeties with 5 RBI.
Zach Eschberger improved to 7-4 overall and 7-2 in GAC play pitching 6 innings striking out four batters in the process.
The two teams will play the finale of the series on Saturday with the first pitch set for Noon.
