Reddie Softball Completes Series Sweep of SWOSU on Saturday

The Henderson State softball team put together back-to-back victories over Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Dee White Field, defeating the Bulldogs 9-0 and 7-5, respectively.

With the two victories, HSU completed a series sweep after previously defeating the Bulldogs in both games of a double-header on Friday.

In the first game, HSU(22-20, 13-17 GAC) put up a whopping seven runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead early in the contest.

Shayla Wright plated first for the Reddies, scoring on an error by the SWOSU shortstop after SWOSU failed to throw Caroline Cullins out at first base.

For the second run of the inning, an Alexia Lopez walk with the bases loaded allowed Courtney Warren to advance home.

Cullins would then add HSU's third run on an Olivia Trapp single to second base, followed by a Keirsten Seahorn grand slam over the left field wall which gave HSU a 7-0 lead.

Seahorn would record her sixth RBI of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending HSU up 9-0 with a double to left field that scored pinch runners Lakin Wolever and Alexis Morton.

The Reddies would receive solid pitching from Michelle Sorensen throughout the contest, closing out the game in five innings after holding SWOSU scoreless.

Sorensen pitched a complete game for HSU, improving to 13-10 on the year and striking out eight batters through five innings of work, while only giving up one hit.

SWOSU's Taya Haney would suffer the loss, falling to 5-10 for the season.

In game two, the Reddies once again got out to a fast start adding two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

A Trapp double to right field plated both Lopez and Cullins, giving Trapp three RBI for the day.

Southwestern Oklahoma would answer in the top of the second inning with a Tori Hawk solo home run to left field.

The Bulldogs would then tie the game when Kenedi Jackson stole second, allowing Sam Perry to advance home on the throw from the catcher in the attempt to throw out Jackson.

The Reddies added one run in the bottom of the inning after Cullins singled to center field, plating Ashleigh Erb on an error from the center fielder which gave Erb the extra time to advance home.

HSU then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third, as hits from Morgan South and Erb combined for three RBI between the two to give HSU a 7-2 advantage.

SWOSU attempted to answer with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth, and a Taya Haney double to center field in the top of the sixth allowed Madison West to advance home from third after an error on the HSU catcher.

However, SWOSU would climb no closer as Sorensen closed out the contest to pick up her first save of the season from the circle.

Madison Calvert was credited with the win after providing 4.1 innings of work, improving to 8-8 on the season, while Southwestern's Taylor Eaves went the distance picking up the loss to drop to 4-8 for the year.

HSU will look to continue it's momentum on the road, as the Reddies travel to Alva, Oklahoma to take on Northwestern Oklahoma in a four-game series beginning with a double-header on Friday that is set for 4 p.m.
