The Henderson State softball team split the first two of a four-game weekend series with Northwestern Oklahoma on Friday evening in Great American Conference action.
HSU defeated the Lady Rangers 6-1 in the opening contest before falling 2-1 in the second in Alva, Oka.
In game one, the Reddies got on the board first in the top of the second inning when
Michelle Sorensen singled to right field, scoring
Keirsten Seahorn from third.
NWOSU evened the score in the bottom of the inning after a ground-out to first base scored Madison McGraw.
However, that was the last time the Lady Rangers would reach home plate, as HSU added five more insurance runs in the contest.
In the top of the third inning, HSU took the lead on a Seahorn 2 RBI double to center field which plated both
Ashlyn White and
Courtney Warren.
With a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth, Seahorn once again came through, smacking a solo home run over the wall, while Sorensen picked up her second RBI of the game immediately after with ground out to second base that scored
Morgan South.
To round out the scoring in the contest, HSU added yet another run in the top of the sixth when Warren doubled to center field, allowing
Shayla Wright to advance home and give HSU the 6-1 lead.
Sorensen would go the distance from the circle to improve to 14-10 on the season, striking out eight batters in the game and giving up just one hit while Madison Garza suffered the loss for NWOSU to fall to 4-14.
Runs did not come as easy for either team in the second game, as both teams scored one run each in the first inning before a scoreless next three.
The Reddies put up the first run of the game when
Ashlyn White blasted a solo home run, but NWOSU followed suit with a solo homer of their own, courtesy of Jordan Haya.
A Peyton Garrett double in the bottom of the fourth inning scored McGraw to give NWOSU a 2-1 lead.
HSU would be unable to score again in the contest, falling in game two for the day-one split in the series.
Henderson State managed to crank out seven hits, but left 10 batters stranded.
Madison Calvert would take the loss for HSU, falling to 8-9 on the year while Karly Murray was awarded the victory for NWOSU.
The Reddies return to action on Saturday to complete the four-game series against Northwestern Oklahoma with first pitch set for Noon.
