Henderson State split a double-header with Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday as the Reddies won 10-5 before dropping the finale 2-1 at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Oklahoma Baptist, 29-15 overall and 19-11 in the Great American Conference won the three-game series as the Reddies fell to 25-21 on the year and 18-12 in league play.
In Saturday's first game, the Reddies spotted Oklahoma Baptist three runs in the first-inning but would respond with three runs of their own in the second.
Hayden Lessenberry got things started for the Reddies with a single up the middle with
Tadarious Hawkins following with a bunt single.
Jake Gaul then laid down a sacrifice bunt which was mishandled to load the bases.
Henderson's first run was scored when
Jared Gage hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field to plate Lessenberry. Singles by
Luke McGuire and
Hunter Mayall would tie the score at 3-3.
Oklahoma Baptist regained the lead in the third, but again the Reddies responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Again it was Lessenberry and Hawkins getting the Reddie rally started with back-to-back singles to begin the frame.
McGuire and
Joseph Gary would both receive walks with the bases loaded to score runs, with Mayall driving in the third with a sacrifice fly to put Henderson on top 6-4.
The Reddies would score another run in the fifth on a RBI single by Mayall and three more in the seventh.
The Henderson seventh was highlight by a triple by Gage, a double by McGuire and an inside-the-park home run by Mayall.
Mayall finished the game 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, while McGuire was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Chris Hunt started on the mound for the Reddies and went six innings striking out seven batters improving to 3-6 on the year.
Blake Patterson pitched the final three innings in relief, striking out two Bison batters in recording his third save.
The final game was a pitcher's duel between left-handers as both offensives struggled.
Henderson first scored in the fifth-inning as Lessenberry led off with a single and advance on a Gary single. Lessenberry scored on a passed ball for the Reddies' lone run.
Henderson's
Zach Eschberger pitched six innings of shutout baseball before running into problems in the seventh.
The Reddies got an unfavorable call to begin the seventh as Joseph Moran reached on an infield single. Eschberger then walked Kyle Abblitt before exiting the game.
Nick Vanthillo entered for Henderson and walked the first two batters he faced which tied the score at 1-1. A bases loaded two-out infield single by Brandon Cuddy would prove to be the winning run.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the final inning, the Reddies put a pair of base runners on board with the help of two walks.
Gary would then put a charge into a Nathan Thompson pitch that sent the ball deep into the left-center field power-alley. However, center fielder Ryan Joyce made the catch slamming into the fence.
Thompson would record the final out to improve to 6-3 on the year.
The Reddies will next travel to Magnolia, Ark. on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup against Southern Arkansas with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
