Reddies Rally To Win 6-5 Over Northwestern Oklahoma

Henderson State rallied from a three run deficit to beat Northwestern Oklahoma 6-5, Friday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies, 17-19 overall and 12-10 in the Great American Conference, belted out three home runs in the game. Henderson entered the weekend having hit just seven round-trippers all season.

NWOSU, 12-25 and 9-13, scored a single run in the first-inning with the Reddies tying the score at 1-1 in the second frame on a RBI double by Jared Gage to score Luke McGuire who supplied a two-out single.

Trailing 4-1 after the Rangers scored three runs in the third-inning, Henderson got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Jake Gaul base-hit that plated AJ Kruzel whole singled earlier in the frame.

The Rangers tacked on a run in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2, but the Reddies got a run back on a solo home run by Tadarious Hawkins in the bottom of the inning.

Kris Priddy would enter the game to begin the sixth-inning in relief of starting pitcher Luke Tebbetts.

The freshman from Terrell, Texas shut down the Rangers the next four innings allowing just one hit while striking out five batters.

Meanwhile, the Reddie offense would get another solo home run in the seventh-inning as Jordan Taylor launched a bomb over the right-field fence to make it a one run game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hayden Lessenberry tied the score to lead off the inning with his first home run of the year.

McGuire then single to right-field followed by a walk issued to Gage. Hunter Mayall would step to the plate and single to the left side but McGuire was unable to score as NWOSU shortstop Xyruse Matinez made a diving play to keep the ball in the infield.

Relief pitcher Brody Ausfahl was able to get Taylor to fly out just beyond second base for the first out of the frame.

Kruzel then hit a shallow fly ball to right field but it was not deep enough to score McGuire from third. However, McGuire forced the right fielder to throw home and his delivery sailed high and got away from the Ranger catcher to allow McGuire to break for home and score the winning run.

Priddy would record the win pitching four scoreless innings improving to 3-0 on the season.

Henderson totaled 12 hits in the game with Mayall, Kruzel, Lessenberry and McGuire all having two hits each.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
