Reddies Complete Sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma

Henderson State completed a three-game sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma as the Reddies beat the Rangers 8-4 and 2-1 Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies improved to 19-19 on the season and 14-10 in the Great American Conference while NWOSU fell to 12-27 and 9-15 in league play.

In the opener, the Reddies banged out 15 hits with Hunter Mayall leading the way going 4-for-4.

Henderson opened with two runs in the first-inning getting a two-run single by Jake Gaul.

The Reddies extended their lead to 6-0 with four runs in the second with the help of a two-run homer by Jared Gage.

Jordan Taylor would make the score 7-0 with a RBI single in the third before Northwestern plated four runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Blake Patterson entered the game in relief of HSU starter Chris Hunt with two outs in the sixth and finished the game striking out six of the 12 batters he faced to pick up his second save.

Hunt would capture his first win of the year striking out seven batters in the process.

Every starter had a hit in the Reddie lineup including Gaul who had three hits, Gage with two and Taylor with two.

The Reddies again jumped on board first in the finale as Taylor hit a two-run blast to give the home team a 2-0 lead. It was Taylor's second home run of the weekend and fourth of the year.

NWOSU pitcher Robert Lawhon held the Reddies in check for the remainder of the game as the University of South Carolina transfer recorded seven strikeouts.

The Reddies, however, got another impressive pitching performance from left-hander Zach Eschberger. The freshman from Bullard, Texas pitched six complete innings, striking out six batters while allowing just three hits.

Nick Vanthillo entered the game to begin the seventh for the Reddies and would struggle as NWOSU loaded the bases on a walk, hit batter and a bunt single.
Vanthillo would get Colton Krokroskia to fly out to shallow left field for the first out before walking in a run.

The senior from Brasschatt, Belgium then struck out Garrett Douglas for the second out of the inning. Vanthillo got out of the jam when Jacob Long grounded out to AJ Kruzel at short to end the game.

Vanthillo recorded his sixth save of the season while Eschberger improved to 6-4 and 6-2 against GAC foes.

Henderson totaled six hits in the game with Tadarious Hawkins, Hayden Lessenberry and Luke McGuire all having doubles.

Mayall finished the series going 6-for-11 to lead the Reddie offense, while Gaul was 5-for-11 and McGuire ending 4-for-10.

Henderson State will next play host to Texas A&M-Texarkana on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
