HSU Volleyball Upsets No. 7 Tampa

Henderson State recorded its biggest upset in more than 10 years as the Reddie volleyball team beat seventh-ranked Tampa 3 sets to 2 Friday at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Tampa, Fla.

Playing in one of the most prestigious tournaments in Division II, the Reddies had three players record double-figure attack winners to beat the host team.

Tampa, a program that has won 17 regional titles and two national championships with the most recent in 2014 when the Spartans went 34-1, won the opening set 25-16.

Henderson State, playing with eight freshmen, rallied to win the second set 25-23 as the Reddies jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Tampa rallied to cut the deficit to 16-14.

HSU then benefitted from four attack errors and got three consecutive kills from Courtney Bolf to claim the set.

The Reddies cruised in the third set as Bolf, Kamra Jackson and Sharon Tukuaoga combined for 11 attack winners.

After Tampa claimed the fourth set to tie the match, Tukuaoga was unstoppable recording six kills including three straight as Henderson claimed the final set 15-11 to win the match.

Libero Sydney Skelton totaled 31 digs to stymie the Spartan hitters, while Bolf and Tukuaoga combined for 29 kills. Jackson added 13 attack winners, with Sariah Boney having 41 set assists.

In the first match of the day for the Reddies, Henderson went up against another stout opponent in University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown with UPJ winning 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 20-25, and 25-17).

Jackson led Henderson with 13 winners, while Bolf had 12 and Tukuaoga with11.

Boney totaled 38 assists for the Reddies while Skelton had 18 defensive digs.

Henderson will finish the tournament on Saturday with a match against Minnesota State at 12:15 p.m. and Franklin Pierce at 4:45 p.m.
