Henderson State scored 28 straight points including 21 in the third quarter to beat Southwestern Oklahoma 45-17, Saturday in Weatherford, Okla.
The No. 8 ranked Reddies improved to 4-0 on the year and extended their road winning streak to 24 games.
The game was delayed 2 ½ hours due to thunderstorms and the late start had its effects on both teams as the Reddies and Bulldogs got off to slow starts trading field goals in the first 16 minutes.
Henderson first got on the board as
Houston Ray booted a 31-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. The Reddies had the ball deep in SWOSU territory after a 20 yard run by
Jaquan Cole and an additional 15 yards courtesy of a Bulldog penalty. However, a penalty sent the Reddies backward and Ray was called on for the first points of the game.
SWOSU would answer putting together a solid drive going 60-yards on 11-plays but had to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Tyler Peterson with 14:35 remaining in the half.
The Reddies punched it into the end zone on their next drive scoring on an 11-yard pass from
Andrew Black to
Courtney Whitehead. The score was set up by a 24-yard run by
Jeremy Wilson and a Black going 5-for-5 for 31 yards through the air.
The Bulldogs would tie the score at 10-10 on a 30-yard pass from Marc Evans to DJ Jones with 2:05 left in the half.
However, that was plenty of time for Black and the Henderson offense as the Reddies would score on the last play of the half.
Black threaded the needle with
Al Lasker making a spectacular catch in the back of the end zone from 31-yards to give Henderson a 17-10 lead at the break.
The Reddies would dominate the third quarter scoring on their first possession of the half on a 6-yard score by Wilson, with the big play being a 19-yard pass from Black to tight end Darren Phillips.
It was the defense's turn to get in on the scoring as the Reddies would score on SWOSU turnover.
For the second time in two weeks
Sheldon Watson came up with another defensive scoring play as the sophomore from Palestine, Texas picked off a Tyler Marr pass and scooted 74 yards to extend the Henderson lead to 31-10 with 7:04 left in the third quarter.
The Reddies would score just before the end of the quarter as Black hooked up with Wilson for 45 yards down to the SWOSU 1. Robert
Thomas then finished the drive off with his third touchdown of the year to extend the lead to 38-10.
SWOSU would establish an extensive drive midway through the fourth quarter as Marr connected with Collin Bricker from 11 yards out to cut the deficit to 38-17 with 10:42 left to play.
The Reddies would tack on a late score as Wilson scored on an 11-yard run.
Henderson totaled 405 yards of offense with Wilson leading the Reddies rushing attack with 100 yards on 15 carries. It is the second straight week that the freshman from Tyler, Texas eclipsed the 100-yard mark.
Jaquan Cole totaled 58 yards on 8 attempts, while Black had 43 yards on 8 carries.
Black completed 13-of-21 passes for 149 yards with Lasker leading the receivers with a pair of catches for 65 yards. Wilson followed with three receptions for 57 yards.
Henderson's defense surrendered 339 yards and forced three turnovers with
Dondre Wright and
Blake Burnard both having fumble recoveries.
Josh Davis had eight tackles for Henderson, while
