After a tough week that saw the Reddies play the top two teams in the Great American Conference in a three day stretch, the Henderson State women's basketball team heads to Oklahoma to begin the second half of its conference slate against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Series:
Henderson and Oklahoma Baptist have played just three times, with the Reddies holding a 2-1 advantage. The Crimson Storm have met up with the Reddies nine times, with Henderson winning six of those meetings. HSU has already beaten both teams this season, defeating Oklahoma Baptist 89-73 on Nov. 19 and SNU 88-69 on Nov. 17, with both games played in Arkadelphia.
Henderson State Notes:
The Reddies enter their second Oklahoma road trip of the year 7-10 but 7-4 in GAC play. Henderson went 1-2 last week, defeating rival Ouachita Baptist 75-74 on Monday, but falling to Arkansas Tech in Russellville 68-62 on Thursday, and then to Harding at home 76-64 on Saturday afternoon. Despite losses to the top two teams in the GAC standings, HSU played well in both games. The Reddies were tied 59-59 at ATU with 2:30 remaining and led unbeaten Harding 49-48 entering the final quarter before ultimately falling in both. Henderson is currently in a tie for third place in the GAC standings wth Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Pink Jones continues her campaign for Freshman of the Year in the GAC, averaging 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game against GAC opponents this season, while fellow freshman
Hailey Estes leads HSU in rebounding, pulling down eight boards per contest.Â
Sophomore
Torrie Thompson had a strong week for Henderson, averaging 14 points per game over the last three contests, including a career-high 20 against Ouachita Baptist on Monday.
As a team HSU scores 75.2 points per game, good for second-highest scoring offense in the conference, and are also second in the GAC in 3-pointers made, with 144 in 17 games, or 8.5 per game. Defensively, Henderson leads the league in steals, averaging 8.6 per contest with 146 total for the year. The Reddies also have one of the best turnover margins in the conference at plus 3.0 per game.
Henderson is 5-1 this season against GAC teams from the state of Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Baptist Notes:
The Bison are 5-12 on the year and 2-9 in GAC play. They defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday 81-79 to end a five-game conference losing streak.
OKBU is led by junior forward Tasha Edge, who averages 13.9 points per game and pulls down 8.6 rebounds per contest, fourth-best in the GAC; as well as junior forward Katy Custer, who is averaging 23.3 points and nine rebounds over her last three games.Â
As a team, the Bison average 71.1 points per game, but give up 73 points per game to their opponents.Â
Southern Nazarene Notes:
The Crimson Storm are 7-7 overall and 4-6 in GAC play this season. They have lost their last two conference games, but prior to that, had won four-straight GAC contests.
SNU is led by senior guard Abby Boyd, who is fifth in the league in both scoring and assists, averaging 14.7 points and 4.3 assists per game.
As a team, the Crimson Storm are third in the GAC in rebounding, averaging 42.7 boards per game, and blocked shots, with 58 on the season and an average of 4.1 per contest.
