Volleyball Tripped Up by Southeastern Oklahoma, 3-1

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After dropping the first two sets to Southeastern Oklahoma, Henderson State was mounting a comeback in the fourth set, but a big Savage Storm run ended the night early as they defeated the Reddies 3-1 (20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25) on Friday in the Duke Wells Center.

SET ONE: SOSU put its stamp on the first set early on, jumping out to a 10-5 lead in the match's first 15 points. The Reddies put together an 8-4 run to close the gap to 14-13, but the Savage Storm took the next five points to get the lead back out to 19-13. Henderson had one more run in it, and won seven of the next 10 points to draw within 22-20, but after a timeout, SOSU composed itself to win the final three and take the first set, 25-20. Sydney Skelton had 10 digs in the set for the Reddies and Courtney Bolf had four kills.

SET TWO: The Savage Storm began the second where it ended the first, and took a quick 9-3 lead to put the Reddies in a hole. Henderson showed fight, rallying to within three points on four separate occasions, including at 22-19 and 24-21, but could not dig all the way out of the deficit, as SOSU took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 set victory. Kamra Jackson had four kills in the set for HSU.

SET THREE: Facing an 0-2 deficit, the Reddies came alive to start the third set and used five kills from Bolf in the first 12 points of the set to grab a 9-3 advantage, their largest lead of the match. SOSU did little to slow HSU's momentum, as Henderson extended the lead out to 19-12 and looked to be in total control. The Savage Storm had a last-ditch run in them, trimming the deficit to 21-18 and forcing a Reddies timeout. After the timeout, though, HSU once again found its groove, and won five of the next seven points to win the third set 25-20 and stay alive in the match. Bolf had seven kills in the set while Adrianna Hartmann added five.

SET FOUR: Riding the momentum from its third set victory, Henderson looked strong in the early-going of the fourth, as it took a 10-5 lead behind three more kills from Bolf. At that point, though, things began to turn, as the Savage Storm found their footing and went on a massive 15-6 run to silence the gym and seize control of the match with a 20-16 lead. Despite losing its lead and now facing defeat, the Reddies would not go away quietly. HSU responded to the big run by winning five of the next seven points to trim the SOSU advantage to just one. It was not to be, though, as the Savage Storm claimed the final three points of the set after long rallies to win it 25-21 and take the match, 3-1.

GAME NOTES: Three Reddies finished with double-digit kills on the night, as Bolf notched 16 and Hartmann and Jackson both had 10. Sariah Boney had another double-double for Henderson with 26 assists and 23 digs, while fellow setter Abby Blackburn finished with 22 assists. Defensively, Skelton led the way for HSU with 28 digs and she got help from Delaney Price, who had 19, and Bolf who had 14 to also notch a double-double. Karlie Greene was big at the net for the Reddies all night and wound up with five blocks. The loss drops HSU to 10-11 on the season and 3-5 in Great American Conference play.

UP NEXT: Henderson faces East Central tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.
