Reddies Pick Up First Win of 2017-18, Defeat Northwest Missouri 75-63

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Henderson State got 19 points from Torrie Thompson and 14 from Pink Jones to run past Northwest Missouri State 75-63 and win its first game of the 2017-18 season on Saturday at the SBU Classic.

For the second time in two games, the Reddies were jump-started by a big second quarter. Henderson outscored the Bearcats 22-13 in the game's second ten minutes to open up a 34-26 halftime lead after trailing 13-12 at the end of the first.

The Reddies extended the lead out to 54-42 on a Haleigh Henson 3-pointer with 48 seconds to go in the third and carried a 10-point advantage into the final quarter, where this time, there would be no drama. Henderson opened the final period with a 10-2 run on buckets from Thompson, Jones, Henson and freshman Lani Snowden, stretching the lead to 64-46 before ultimately putting the Bearcats away, 75-63.

Thompson was 8-of-10 from the field for Henderson and added seven rebounds to go along with her team-high 19 points. Jones added 14 while Bree Bossier chipped in 12 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Reddies.

Henderson as a team was 15-for-18 from the free throw line on the day and shot 47.4 percent from the field, while holding Northwest to just 40.7 percent shooting, which included 29.3 percent in the first half. For the second-straight game, HSU won the rebounding battle against its opponent, this time winning it 35-31.

The Reddies, now 1-1 on the season, return to action on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. against Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma.
