Henderson State opened up the 8-States Softball Classic with a pair of wins over Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern State, Friday in Bentonville, Ark.
In the first game of the day, Henderson scored eight runs in the top of the fourth-inning to break a scoreless tie to beat Fort Hays State 10-0
.
Destiny Garza got things started for the Reddies with a one-out double and then scored when
Olivia Trapp followed with a double of her own for the first run of the game.
Following a walk issued to
Ashleigh Erb,
Alyssa Dixon hit her first collegiate home run to score three runs and put the Reddies out in front 4-0.
Alexis Morton would later score
Shayla Wright with a single and
Bethany Allen reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Keirsten Seahorn matched Dixon with a 3-run blast of her own to make the score 8-0 after four innings.
Henderson added two more runs in the fifth as Erb and Dixon hit back-to-back solo home runs for the final score.
Dixon was 2-for-4 in the game with two home runs and four runs batted in, while Morton was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Michelle Sorensen picked up the win in the circle. The junior from Sherwood, Ark. struck out four batters and surrendered three hits.
In the second game, Missouri Southern led 2-0 after three innings but the Reddies fought back to win the game in walk-off fashion.
Henderson cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth-inning as
Bethany Allen led off the inning with a single up the middle and later scored on a base hit by Erb to left field.
The Reddies tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth as
Courtney Warren and Morton hit back-to-back doubles.
In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter
Kaitlyn Felder led off the inning with a walk.
Brooklynn Jimeson entered the game to run for Felder and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Warren.
Jimeson moved to third on a single by Morton to put runners on the corners with one out. Allen drove home the game-winning run with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Jimeson to end the game.
Henderson had seven hits in the game with Morton going 2-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Reddies. Warren also collected two hits in three at bats including a double.
Sorensen entered the game in the third-inning and allowed two hits while striking out six to pick up her second win of the day and improve to 3-4 on the year.
The Reddies will finish the tournament on Saturday with a contest against Minnesota-Duluth at 11 a.m. followed by a match-up against Central Missouri at 3 p.m.
