Henderson's fourth quarter comeback falls short in 82-73 loss to Arkansas Tech

ARKADELPHIA, AR - Henderson State got 17 points from Torrie Thompson and Hailey Estes notched a double-double, but the Reddies' late rally ran out of time and they fell on Saturday to Arkansas Tech 82-73 in the Duke Wells Center.

The Golden Suns went up early, behind a 7-0 run to start the game, which they used to take a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, ATU extended its lead to 30-17 with 6:44 to go in the half behind an 11-5 spurt. Henderson cut the deficit to 34-25 with 2:08 remaining in the period, but the Golden Suns outscored HSU 8-4 in the last two minutes to carry a 42-29 advantage into the break.

In the third quarter it looked like the game might get away from Henderson, as ATU extended its lead out to as many as 19 points, 64-45, before ultimately taking a 64-47 advantage into the game's final 10 minutes.

The Reddies, however, would not go away without a fight. Over the first seven minutes of the final period, Henderson outscored the Golden Suns 21-6 behind some stifling defense and 3-pointers from Blu Jones, Thompson and Haleigh Henson, to cut the lead to just 70-68 with 3:06 to play. ATU extended its advantage back out to six points with a 3-pointer before Henson answered with a 3-pointer of her own to trim it to 74-71 with 1:18 left. After an ATU turnover, the Reddies had the ball and a chance to tie in the final minute but could not get a shot off and had to foul. From there Arkansas Tech's Anissa Pounds put the game away at the free throw line, making six in the final 40 seconds to ice it and give the Golden Suns a 82-73 win.

Thompson led the Reddies with 17 points, while Estes scored 14 and added 11 rebounds. Both Henson and Bree Bossier also had 12 points for Henderson. The Reddies snagged 16 offensive rebounds and forced 26 Golden Suns turnovers in defeat. The loss drops Henderson to 8-12 in Great American Conference play this season.

Henderson's next game is Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma.
