WEATHERFORD, OK. - Henderson State got 18 points and seven rebounds from
Pink Jones and had three other players in double figures, but Southwestern Oklahoma State used a big fourth quarter run to defeat the Reddies 80-69 in the Pioneer Cellular Events Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Reddies hung around in the first half with favored SWOSU, trailing by just five points, 21-16, after one quarter, and then cutting the deficit to 25-23 at the 7:56 mark of the second. From there, the Lady Bulldogs took control, and used a 17-6 stretch over the next seven minutes to seize a 42-29 lead with 22 seconds to play in the half. Henderson got a little boost before the half, as
Bree Bossier hit two free throws with 3 seconds to go, and then after a SWOSU turnover,
Hailey Estes caught, turned and nailed a 3-pointer all in 0.3 seconds at the buzzer to cut the deficit at the break to just 42-34.
In the third period SWOSU again tried to run away from the Reddies, and used a gradual 13-7 spurt to put Henderson in a 55-41 hole with 6:22 left in the quarter. Again, though, HSU responded, and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-4 the rest of the period to trim the lead to 59-53 and put themselves within striking distance entering the final 10 minutes of play on the road. SWOSU finally shut the door on the Reddies in fourth, though, as they used a 15-3 run over the first 5:40 of the quarter to take control of the game and ultimately pull away to win it 80-69, ending the Reddies' quest for a spot in the Great American Conference Tournament.
Jones led Henderson with 18 points and seven assists, while Estes added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Brittany Branum also had 12 for the Reddies with six boards and
Blu Jones chipped in 11 points. HSU forced 21 Lady Bulldog turnovers and only turned it over nine times on its end, but Henderson shot just 29.1 percent from the field in the loss.
The defeat ends the Reddies' season with a record of 8-20 overall and 8-14 in the GAC.
