Reddies Open Softball Season with 9-2 Win Over NSU

Henderson State opened the 2017 softball season with a 9-2 win over Northeastern State, Friday at the Ronnie Hawkins Classic in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies got out of the gate quickly scoring four runs in the opening inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Bethany Allen began her career at Henderson leading off the game with a leadoff single up the middle to jump-start the Reddies.

After a walk surrendered to Kaitlyn Felder, Keirsten Seahorn delivered a one-out RBI single to left field to put the Reddies on the board.

Selena Mendoza followed with an infield single to load the bases with Henderson scoring its next three runs with bases loaded walks issued to Lakin Wolever, Ashleigh Erb and Shayla Wright.

Henderson tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second as Courtney Warren led off the inning with a double to right-center field and scored on Seahorn's second single of the game.

Seahorn came home later in the frame on a fielder's choice by Wolever to make the score 6-0 after two complete innings.

Northeastern responded with a run in the top of third, but the Reddies answered as Wright reached on a two-out walk, stole second and scored when Warren laced a double down the right field line.

Leading 7-2 after five innings, Henderson scored two more runs in the sixth as Wright reached on an error and scored on a triple by Allen. Allen then scored when Warren hit a sacrifice fly for Henderson's final run.

Michelle Sorensen, HSU's all-time leader in pitching wins, picked up her 44th victory going the distance. The junior from Sherwood, Ark. struck out five batters and surrendered just two hits.

The Reddies totaled nine hits in the game with Allen finishing with three hits and two RBI, with Seahorn and Mendoza having two hits each.

Henderson will next play Lincoln at 2 p.m. Friday.
