GAME ONE:
Henderson State's
Kylie Buttram delivered a pinch hit single in the bottom of the 10th inning that scored
Ashleigh Erb to help the Reddies secure a walk off win for the second day in a row against Arkansas Tech, 2-1.
The Reddies threatened in their first opportunity at the plate, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, but Golden Suns' pitcher Cara Tolar got Erb to fly out to help Tech escape the inning with no damage done.
ATU broke the scoreless tie in the top of fifth, when Ashton Sangster led off the inning with a double, was sac bunted over to third and then scored on a deep fly out from Gaby Vasquez to make it 1-0 Golden Suns. Henderson had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but a ground out ended the inning, leaving the Reddies down to their final three outs.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Alyssa Dixon found a hole in the infield for a leadoff single that she extended to second base with heads-up base running, but the next two batters struck out and fouled out. With one out to spare, Henderson sent in
Lakin Wolever to pinch hit, and despite getting down to her final strike, she came through for the Reddies with a bloop hit into right field that the outfielder could not get to, which scored Dixon from second and tied things up 1-1, sending the game into extra innings.
Henderson had opportunities to win the game in both the eighth and ninth innings, but twice left the bases loaded via inning-ending ground outs. It looked as though ATU would capitalize in the top of the 10th, when they got runners to second and third with two outs, but Reddies' pitcher
Michelle Sorensen got Megan Goodnight to ground out to the shortstop Erb and escaped the jam.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Reddies finally broke through. Erb started things with a leadoff single and was then bunted to second by Dixon to put the winning run in scoring position for the third-straight inning. At that point, Buttram was called on to pinch hit for
Brooklynn Jimeson, and she came through, lifting a single over the head of the first baseman to bring Erb home and send the Reddies' bench spilling out onto the diamond in celebration of a walk off win for the second time in 24 hours.
Sorensen continued her dominant play in the circle for the Reddies in the victory, picking up her second win of the series while going the full 10 innings, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one run on four hits. In her two appearances in the series, Sorensen pitched 29 innings, gave up two earned runs and had 33 strikeouts. Dixon,
Keirsten Seahorn and
Selena Mendoza each had two hits for Henderson at the plate on the day.
GAME TWO:
Henderson State held a 3-1 lead and needed just six outs to secure a third win in the series, but Arkansas Tech got a two-run homer in the sixth inning and tacked on a run in extras to defeat the Reddies 4-3 and earn a 2-2 split in the GAC matchup.Â
Tech got on the board first when Ashton Sangster hit a solo homerun to deep center in the fourth inning to give the Golden Suns a 1-0 advantage. Henderson answered quickly, though, in the bottom half of the inning when
Keirsten Seahorn doubled to score
Olivia Trapp and
Ashleigh Erb doubled to score Seahorn, to make it 2-1 Reddies.
HSU got an insurance run in the fifth when
Courtney Warren grounded into a fielder's choice to third to score
Alyssa Dixon and increase the Reddies' lead to 3-1.Â
Just six outs away from a series win, Henderson saw the lead disappear in one swing of the bat, as Gaby Vasquez reached base on a walk and Megan Goodnight blasted a two-run shot to the deepest part of the park to knot things up 3-3 in the top of the sixth.Â
The game eventually reached extras for the third time in the series, and after neither team could break through in the first frame, Tech finally scratched a run in the ninth on a single from Janie Knowles that scored Sangster from second to give the Golden Suns a 4-3 lead. Dixon reached on a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Reddies a base runner, but a pop out to left field ended the rally for Henderson and gave Tech a 4-3 win.
Despite the loss,
Sydney Bonner pitched well for the Reddies in the circle, giving up just one run on five hits in five innings of work. Dixon led the efforts at the plate for Henderson, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run.Â
Monday's results move the Reddies to 11-13 overall and 5-6 in Great American Conference play.
The Reddies' next games are Friday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State at Dee White Field in Arkadelphia.
