Union University put together back-to-back doubles in the top of the 10
th-inning to escape with a 6-5 win over Henderson State, Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Bulldogs, 17-3 overall and ranked No. 24 nationally, used one-out doubles by Hayden Lewis and Ryne Roper to avoid the upset.
Henderson, 13-5 overall, held a 3-1 lead after the first-inning as the Reddies got a three-run double by
Dylan McCain.
After Union scored a run in the second, Henderson put together three hits in the bottom of the frame with
Alan Hall reaching on a base hit then scoring on a
Hayden Lessenberry single to left field.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 4-4 in the third, but again the Reddies responded with a run as
Joe Myers scored when
Nolan Ryan hit a deep fly ball to right field that was ruled a three-base error.
Union tied the score at 5-5 in the sixth with the help of a Caleb Demarigny double.
Henderson had an opportunity to take the lead in the eighth with runners on the corners and one out, but relief pitcher Skyler Harrison got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
The Reddies used six pitchers in the game, with
Blake Patterson getting the tough loss despite striking out a pair of batters.
Jon Youngblood pitched two solid innings of relief, striking out four batters without allowing a hit.
Henderson totaled eight hits in the game with
Joe Myers leading the way going 3-for-4.
The Reddies will travel to Russellville for a three game Great American Conference series against first-place Arkansas Tech with the first game set for Friday at 6 p.m.
