Reddies Fall Short, Lose To Northwestern Oklahoma 36-30

Henderson State dropped its second straight game as the Reddies lost to Northwestern Oklahoma 36-30, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium/Ruggles Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Northwestern Oklahoma converted on three 4th-down conversions in the second-half  to beat the Reddies including a 35-yard gain by quarterback Isiah Weed on 4th-and-2 late in the game to set up the winning touchdown. Anthony Cota provided the winning score for the Rangers with a 1-yard plunge with 1:32 left in the game.

Andrew Black put in a solid effort for Henderson rushing the ball 22 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The Reddie quarterback also completed 8-of-15 passes for 143 yards. The lone blemish came on Henderson's final effort as he was heavily pressured and threw an interception that ended Henderson's chances of a late comeback.

The game began with Northwestern putting together a solid drive on the its first possession driving down to the Reddie 7-yardline. Andrew Lesnick's 24-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left giving the ball to Henderson on its 20-yardline.

The Reddies then went on a 17-play drive moving the ball down to the NWOSU 5. Black carried the ball six times for 36 yards during the drive while Cobra Jones rushed five times for 22 yards.

However, Julio Cervantes' 22-yard field goal attempt was wide right and the game remained scoreless.

The Reddies did get on the board on their next possession with the yardage coming from the Henderson ground game.

Black collected runs of 12 and 18 yards, with Ricky Henderson gaining 11 yards on a run down to the Ranger 5.
Black capped off a 10-play, 69-yard drive with a 3-yard dive to put HSU on top 6-0 with 6:19 left in the half. The two-point conversion failed.

NWOSU, 1-2 on the season, answered on its next possession with Jacob Peyton scoring on a 6-yard rush up the middle. Zave Goodrich's extra-point was good and the Rangers took a 7-6 lead with 3:28 left in the half.

With Henderson only attempting three passes in the first 27 minutes of the game, Black connected with Darion Gray for a 43-yard reception with HSU getting an additional 10 yards on a sideline interference penalty moving the ball down to the Northwestern 11.

Cecil Langston scored two plays later on a 7-yard jaunt to put the Reddies back on top 13-7 at the half.

Northwestern Oklahoma got the ball to begin the second half and the Rangers converted on a 3rd-and-6 when Weed connected with Da'Shawn Gordon to the Henderson 22.

The Rangers took the lead when Weed found Gavin Garner in the back of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown to give NWOSU a 14-13 lead.

Black went back to work on Henderson's next drive completing a pair of big passes to Ben Johnson for 21 yards and another toss to Austin Bennett. The junior from Tyler, Texas finished the drive with a 9-yard score to put the Reddies back on top 20-14.

Again the Rangers answered converting on 3rd-and-8 and 4th-and-9 to recapture the lead as Weed finished the drive hooking up with Garner again for a 17-yard score.

The Reddies went on top again, thanks to a 5-yard score by Black, but again the Rangers responded as Weed broke free for a 19-yard touchdown.
Henderson took a 30-28 lead with 3:24 to play as Cervantes booted a 19-yard field goal.

The Rangers began the winning drive on the Reddie 40 then proceeded to go 60 yards on 6 plays for the win.

The Reddies finished the game with 413 yards of offense, including 270 rushing yards.

Jones carried the ball 12 times for 53 yards while Henderson had 36 yards on 6 attempts.

Malik Brown recorded 10 tackles for Henderson while Sam Johnson had four tackles including two sacks.

Henderson will next travel to Weatherford, Okla. on Saturday, Sept. 23 when the Reddies take on Southwestern Oklahoma with the opening kick set for 6 p.m.
