ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Adrianna Hartmann had 12 kills and Sariah Boney notched a double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs, as Henderson State rolled past Southern Arkansas 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) in its home opener on Thursday night.
SET ONE: The first set was tight in the early-going, as neither team could open up a lead on the other. With the score knotted at 11-11, Henderson got three straight kills from Karlie Greene, Violet Williams and Adrianna Hartmann, which sparked a 9-3 Reddies run, giving them the lead 20-14. SAU took the next two to cut the deficit to four points, but they would come no closer, as kills from Greene and Zuzana Ondruskova, as well as an ace from Sydney Skelton, helped HSU close it out, 25-17, and take a 1-0 lead. Ondruskova came out on fire for the Reddies in set one, finishing with seven kills in the period.
SET TWO: For the second set in a row, things started out tight, but with the score 9-8 in the Reddies' favor, HSU got going, taking the next five points on back-to-back kills from Williams and Hartmann and three-consecutive Lady Muleriders errors to open up a 14-8 lead. After stretching its advantage out to 17-9, the largest lead of the game, Henderson saw SAU begin to rally. The Lady Muleriders slowly clawed their way back into the match, going on a 12-6 run to trim the lead down to 23-21 and make the Reddies feel the pressure. Despite seeing their lead whittled down, HSU responded, taking two of the next three points to win the set 25-22 and seize a 2-0 advantage in the match. Hartmann had three kills in the period for the Reddies, who were aided by 12 SAU attack errors in the set.
SET THREE: Henderson got out to a great start in the third frame, quickly taking a 5-1 lead, but saw SAU again make a run to get back in it, as the Lady Muleriders eventually tied things back up at 11-11. SAU won two of the next three points to take its largest lead, 14-12, but the Reddies did not let that lead last long, as they went on a 7-1 run to grab a 19-15 advantage and put the Lady Muleriders' backs against the wall. Again, SAU rallied, trimming the deficit to 22-21 in a last-gasp effort on the road, but Henderson would not be denied in its home opener. Kills from Kamra Jackson and Courtney Bolf in the set's final moments helped HSU put SAU away, 25-21, and win the match 3-0. Hartmann had five kills on six attacks in the set to help the Reddies close it out.
GAME NOTES: Hartmann's 12 kills came on just 21 attacks, leaving her with a .381 attacking percentage for the game. After a hot start, Ondruskova finished with 10 kills for the match, while Williams and Bolf each had eight. Danika Daum added 18 assists of her own to go with Boney's 23 and Sydney Skelton led HSU with 21 digs in the win. Hartmann and Greene both had three blocks for HSU. Henderson won the hitting battle with SAU 153-133, had 12 more digs, 46-34, 12 more kills, 48-36, and held the Lady Muleriders to a .113 attack percentage on the night. The win moves the Reddies to 8-6 on the season and 2-1 in Great American Conference play.
