Reddies Slowed by No. 21 SAU in 34-14 Murphy USA Classic Defeat

EL DORADO, Ark. — Henderson State's offense ran into a wall on Saturday afternoon, as No. 21 Southern Arkansas held the Reddies to just 155 total yards and captured the 2018 Murphy USA Classic crown 34-14. The loss snaps Henderson's four-game winning streak.

The Mulerider defense stifled the Reddies (5-4) in the opening half, as two HSU turnovers and two quick touchdowns just before the half from SAU (8-1) helped the Riders build a daunting 34-0 advantage at the halftime break.

Henderson got one score back in the third quarter courtesy of the defense, when Malik Brown picked off his second pass of the game three yards deep in the Southern Arkansas end zone and returned it for the Reddies' first score. The 103-yard pick-six was the longest interception return for a touchdown in school history.

The Reddies found pay dirt again in the fourth quarter when Kody Whitaker connected with John Murray from eight yards out for his first touchdown pass of the season, but it was too little, too late for HSU, as it ran out of time and saw its longest winning streak since the start of 2016 snapped.

Richard Stammetti and Whitaker combined for just 104 passing yards in defeat, while Murray led the receiving corps with five catches for 53 yards and his fifth touchdown of the season. Logan Moragne had 36 of the Reddies' 59 rushing yards on the day.

Cameron Sonnier, Bowen Sweeney and Jake Chatman each registered double digit tackles defensively for Henderson. Sonnier finished with a game and season high 16, while Sweeney had 15 and Chatman had 10. Brown's two interceptions on Saturday gives him three in the last two games and on the year.

The Reddies will look to rebound next Saturday, Nov. 3, at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium when they take on Arkansas-Monticello at 2 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
